Players ranging from WWE to ABC News and Univision will again try to elbow their way onto pay-TV program guides this year. But 2013 may prove particularly inhospitable for upstart networks as cable and satellite distributors get serious about mitigating rising content costs.
Time Warner Cable just dropped the arts channel Ovation, arguing that fewer than 1% of its subscribers tune in on any given day — not enough to justify the $10 million in carriage fees it says it has paid over the past several years. Ovation isn’t even an arts channel any more, Time Warner Cable says, contending that 70% of its schedule is now turned over to old movies, repeats of “Antiques Road Show” and direct-response product pitches.
Cable operators say they are open to talks about carrying new networks — Time Warner Cable added NFL Network, BBC World News and Aspire, among others, last year — but those conversations are becoming more difficult.
Effective TV advertising has an extraordinary ability to drive brand conversations on Twitter, as this chart shows week in and week out. As the chart also regularly reveals, life beyond advertising has a similar power. But when advertising and life converge, brands can expect even more.
Take the holidays, for instance. Tablet brands received huge lifts in Twitter mentions from Dec. 23 through 29, according to data from Bluefin Labs. Apple’s iPad achieved the biggest increase, driven by a combination of its status as a coveted gift and its sentimental holiday ads, Bluefin said.
Amazon’s Kindle also won a spot on the list as people posted to Twitter about receiving the devices as a gift. Its TV spots, however, did not play as much of a role in getting people talking, according to Bluefin’s research.
Very.co.uk products, including branded dressing gowns, are set to feature in the Big Brother house with click-to-buy placement on the Channel 5 website.

“We are proud and pleased that Al-Jazeera, the award-winning international news organization, has bought Current TV,” said Al Gore, co-founder and chairman, and Joel Hyatt, co-founder and CEO, in a joint statement. “Since its founding in 2005, Current has grown into a national network available in nearly 60 million homes, offering thought-provoking commentary and Emmy and Peabody award-winning programming. Current Media was built based on a few key goals: To give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling. The film, directed by Antoine Bardou-Jacquet at Partizan, is a rebrand campaign for the airline, and will air in 30-, 60- and 90-second TV cuts cuts as well as in cinema. It is shot in a glamorous, cinematic trailer style. According to Simon Lloyd, director of marketing at the company, is meant to “bring the glamor and fun back into long-haul travel.”
