Spotlight On NW Creative: Sub Rosa Spirits
Posted in: UncategorizedMike Sherwood, the alchemist behind Sub Rosa Spirits wrote to us today to say that his packaging received an Award of Merit at The Rosey Awards last night.
“The folks at Magneto Brand Advertising did a great job with the Sub Rosa Spirits labels,” he says.
Portland Mercury published a nice feature on Sherwood and Sub Rosa last spring. Here’s their take on what’s inside the bottles:
The saffron vodka is a masterly concoction of eight spices with notes of cumin and coriander as well as fragrant overtones of saffron. It’s quite spicy, inspired by curry, and when stirred with mango nectar it develops on the palate like a hard mango lassi.
The tarragon is another story. Here, there are hints of citrus and anise along with a clean tarragon wash. It is perfect on its own, stirred with ice, accompanied by a twist of lemon and sipped from a pre-chilled martini glass.
The Sub Rosa labels also appear in the 2008 Print Magazine Design Annual.

MINNEAPOLIS (AdAge.com) — November sweeps end next Wednesday, which means reruns will soon begin. Unless it's this week's top 10 list of programs, where repeats are in full force. Indeed, nine of the top 10 are the same shows that were on last week's list, as viewers, in the midst of new eras on Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, seem to be opting for as little change as possible in their Main Street living rooms.
Bastholm, Ramussen, Palmer Have A Good Ol’ Fashioned Digi-wank
Posted in: Uncategorized
The New York Times magazine gathered some industry professionals together to talk a little digital advertising. Included were: Benjamin Palmer, C.E.O. of the Barbarian Group.
Lars Bastholm, chief creative officer at AKQA and Robert Rasmussen, executive creative director of the Nike account at R/GA… Oh wait. The venerable paper seems to have missed Rasmussen’s jump to BBH. Anyway, these three guys got together for a little bit of a digi-wank.
The web version is five pages comes with headings such as “Facebook Overalls” and “The Death Of The Massive Money Machine.” A tad much, but clearly this one if for the laymen. In all honesty, these guys have some salient points. They address the things we all know about the internet, emerging media, etc. They are selling that digi business like their lives depend on it. Well, someone has to do it.
What’s most interesting is that Bastholm mentions Nike a few times, a client of AKQA’s and Rasmussen doesn’t say a word despite having been the executive creative director on the Nike account at R/GA.
Bastholm also said: “Well, we do have a ton of different new media and new ways to use them. But before we get there, I would suggest that first, you take a step backward and ask yourself, How do I make my brand relevant?”
It’s the same old question. Somethings in advertising never change.

Posted in: UncategorizedDentsu Has Finally Made Drew Neisser A Real Renegade
Posted in: UncategorizedDigital agency Renegade has decided that it doesn’t need no stinkin’ Dentsu. The holding company has sold its interest to CEO and founder, Drew Neisser.
From Mediapost: “We believe that being independent will elevate the entrepreneurial spirit that is especially important in this challenging economic environment,” Neisser said. “Without the support of Dentsu over the years, we would not have been able to build the type of organization that we have today.:
Well, now he can find out just what it’s like to be an independent rebel in the ad business. Come on… it’s kind of funny that Neisser’s shop, which launched in 1996 with a lot of help from Dentsu was named Renegade in the first place.

Posted in: UncategorizedLinda Thaler On How To Keep An Assistant
Posted in: UncategorizedAgency owner Linda Kaplan Thaler, who has had the same executive assistant, Fran Marzano, for twenty-six fricking years, told Forbes that:
“The big mistake people make is they think, ‘You’re here to get me coffee and stay late and all that, so that’s expected.'” The three words missing are please and thank you. The perfect relationship with an assistant has to be a long-term plan, not a short-term tactic, so that they never feel beaten down. It’s also about making them feel a part of whatever success you do get: ‘We won this, we did this.'”
Of course, Linda wrote an entire book on how being nice will get you ahead in the business world. I gotta wonder here… does “please” and “thank you” really keep you satisfied as an assistant for twenty some odd years? Especially, when Thaler also said:
“I have two kids now, and my needs have evolved. There are a lot of personal things I just can’t get done during a day, so often it’s about keeping my daughter’s calendar for the year, and could you order this book from Amazon for my parents, and remind me to RSVP for this or that.”
Okay. Fran better have some points in the agency; be making some fat cash. Seriously.

Which Media Holiday Parties Can’t Be Stopped?
Posted in: UncategorizedIn these dark economic days, it’s pretty badass to be celebrating anything. We’ve told you all about the media party cancellations — now we want to focus on the few, the proud: The Media Parties That Will Go On, Come Hell or High Water.
If your company is still planning a holiday party, tell us here so we can spread the good cheer.
Fill in the short form, and let us know the details. (Will there be open bar? Top shelf alcohol or just beer, wine and pretzels?)
We assume your holiday party is closed to non-company attendees, so when asked for info that does not apply (i.e. “How to RSVP”) just write “N/A” in those fields. We’ll then compile the entire list in a week or so and present it for all to view in our events newsletter, The Press List.

MillerCoors will soon be headquartered in Chicago, by the way. The entire business is valued at $400M. That’s a lot of dough for the Chicago shops and a lot jobs for the city itself. And Chicago most certainly needs all the help it can get right now.

Crazy Bad-Ass Bruce Lee Plays Ping Pong with Nunchuks
Posted in: UncategorizedIllegal Advertising never ceases to come through with the coolest spots. Case in point, the above piece for the new Nokia N96 was made for audiences in Japan. However, the message travels well around the globe — playing ping pong against Bruce Lee (who uses nunchucks rather than a paddle) is not a good idea. But it certainly is fun to watch.
