“The War On Talent” Generates Lots Of War Stories

I’ve written nearly 115 columns for Talent Zoo since 2002, but no column has received as many comments as The War On Talent has.

The frustration among job seekers, and even Creative Directors seeking talent, is palpable. One person wrote to me about an agency giving her a basic skills test:

The test was an hilarious math quiz clearly geared for ten year olds. Using Google, I searched out the provider of the test, and its history. It had been designed to weed out high school students looking for fast food jobs and for postal workers lacking high school degrees, to test the soundness of their GED level. Apparently, this agency’s HR head had been an easy sell for this testing company.

I ignored the test.

I began to get nasty emails and phone calls from the HR lady: Why haven’t you taken our test! it is required or ELSE!

YouTube To Try Yet Again To Make Some Cash

With over 300 million users, YouTube is still not turning a profit and investors are getting ants in their pants. Someone has to do something. So, yesterday, Google announced that it would begin selling space on YouTube search-results pages to advertisers.
When a user searches the word “hot body,” they’ll get the usual soft core porn and along the side bar, a small image with text for say, Axe. Just like Google search results, advertisers will pay by clicks.

From The New York Times:

“I’ve always liked YouTube, but as an advertising mode, it’s difficult,” said Ashley Vinson, executive producer of integrated creative at the advertising agency DDB Chicago, adding that “I can get my videos to show up when people are doing searches, versus me sending my videos to 20 friends and hoping someone finds it.”

Other deals YouTube has cooking include: a webcast event titled, “YouTube Live,” which be held on November 22. The event will features stars such as Will.i.Am and YouTube celebrities such as Esmee Denters, who has posted video of herself covering popular tunes.

Plus, YouTube has signed a distribution deal with Yellowbook to feature their advertisers videos on the network.

Legendary ad man Jerry Della Femina has given women in the business their due this morning. His piece in Forbes begins with his memory of a 1975 pitch for Tambrands (a tampon brand from P&G) where there wasn’t a woman in the room. Hell, that’s still not so unusual in 2008.

You see, Della Femina has just read Juliann Sivulka’s new book, Ad Women: How They Impact What We Need, Want, and Buy. Sivulka’s book is an indepth and surprising history of women’s role in the advertising business. Come on. Did you know that Mathilde C. Weil started the M.C. Weil Agency just 20 years after the Civil War?

Sivulka explores three key periods in the history of American advertising, which represent eras of major social change for women (1880-1920, the 1920s, and the 1970s). She discusses the effect on advertising due to the women’s movement, minority movements, and consumer activism, and devotes an entire chapter to the contributions to advertising of African American, Hispanic, and Asian American women in the twentieth century. Hot damn!

It’s not all about the past though. The title also sheds light on the craptastic fact that women in the industry are still paid less and promoted at a slower rate. Can you believe we still have to protest this crap?

U.S. getting its own atheism bus campaign

Atheists seem to have a thing for buses. We recently wrote about the bus ads in London which proclaimed, “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” Along these same lines, Washington, D.C., is now getting its own atheist bus campaign, headlined, “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness’ sake.” The advertiser is the American Humanist Association, which is putting $40,000 into the holiday campaign. An AHA rep says the group is running the ads now because “there are an awful lot of agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a little alone during the holidays because of its association with traditional religion.” (Can’t they just comfort themselves with some rampant consumerism?) For its part, the American Family Association was typically eloquent in denouncing the effort. “It’s a stupid ad,” says a rep there.
