Exclusive: MRM Worldwide Wins Crown Royal

CR.jpeg

AgencySpy has learned that MRM Worldwide has won the Crown Royal account, which had been with either Grey or G2. MRM will handle the client’s digital business, including the CR Web site and a club called, “Society of the Crown.”

Sounds swanky. According to our source, Agency.com, Modem and R/GA were also in the race; though we are unsure as to whether or not Grey/G2 chose to compete.

Citigroup Can Shove It. We’re Going With Kool Moe Dee.

“Advertising in the U.S. may not recover until 2010 if businesses wait for the economy to bounce back before boosting marketing spending, analysts at Citigroup Inc. said. Ad spending across all media, including print, broadcast and the Internet, may fall 1.8 percent this year and 3.6 percent in 2009, Citigroup’s Catriona Fallon and her colleagues said in a report yesterday.”

First it was that it wouldn’t recover until late 2008, then 2009, then late 2009. You know what… Citigroup can shove it. What do you know? You couldn’t even predict the giant, groundbreaking, worldwide credit crisis. Missed that did ya’? So you know what? We’re advertising and we’re saying that we can do this. Play time is over. We’re going to go work just like Kool Moe Dee said. Yeah, some of us may falter, but we’re gonna be aiight.

We’re so much more bad ass than you think. We ain’t beat yet.

Chicago Is Headed Into The Deep Dark Unknown Says Daley

everythingwillbeokay.jpg

Chicago’s Mayor, Richard M. Daley, has told reporters that both city and private sector workers should get ready for a clusterfuck.
The Mayor says that chief executive officers have told him to expect huge layoffs in the next month and into the new year.

Mayor Daley said: “Each one tells me what they’re laying off, and they’re going to double that next year. We’re talking huge numbers of permanent layoffs for people in the economy. It’s going to have a huge effect on all businesses.”

Hopefully, those execs that spoke with Daley do not include CEOs of agencies. Crossed fingers that Chicago’s advertising industry can weather the storm and holding companies can assist where necessary.

'Hacking' Facebook Photos in the Name of Guerrilla Marketing

I am seeing a new "hack" on Facebook photos more and more frequently — and I think it will soon be repurposed as an interesting marketing tool. Namely, people have begun to upload a photo of something they wish to promote (perhaps a candidate or event) and then "tag" the photo with the names of as many influential friends as they can.

Six Flags Rolls Out Viral Game to Hype Superman Ride

LOS ANGELES (AdAge.com) — Three minutes, 22 seconds. That's the brief, adrenaline-squirting time span in which riders of Six Flags' "Superman: Ride of Steel" roller coaster get to scream themselves hoarse at 77 miles an hour. But by the time a new viral marketing campaign from Six Flags wraps up, executives hope "Steel" riders will have spent several hours hyperventilating over the property — even before they strap in and drop 221 feet.

Dollars Down The Drain: The List Of Canceled TV Shows

lipstickjunglecanceled.jpg

If you bought media during a handful of shows this year, you’re a sucker. The list of canceled shows has been trickling in. So far, you can bet that:

Brooke Shields’ lackluster female drama on NBC, Lipstick Jungle is donezo.

Christian Slater’s NBC show, My Own Worst Enemy is also out.

– Some comedy on the troubled CBS called, The Ex-List? Fahgettaboudit.

– Darn it. King of The Hill has got the axe after 13 seasons.

– Fox’s MadTV is also out of rotation. Really? I thought that show got canceled long, long ago.

Another $100M Account? This Time For W+K

First Droga5 now W+K will take home $150M account. From the Wieden & Kennedy blog:

“Awesome news! Wieden + Kennedy has been appointed as lead strategic and creative agency for Nokia’s Nseries business on a global basis following a pitch led by the team here in London (with help from Amsterdam) against incumbent Lowe/IPG.

Nseries is Nokia’s flagship sub-brand. It consists of a range of multimedia mobile devices. The convergence device market is growing, currently representing 40 million units a year, and Nokia is the market leader worldwide. It’s a landmark win for us – a huge piece of global business and the opportunity to do some really exciting, innovative work. It’s pretty meaningless to talk billings figures on a global appointment like this but Marketing Week quoted it as ‘£100 million’. It’s big, anyway.

This was one of those pitches where the plan came together beautifully. The team went into the meeting confident and enthusiastic and came out with the business. Nice.

We will begin work immediately, and first communications should roll out in 2009.”

The Beaver Stays Down Under

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the “Down-Under” “Beaver” ad campaign for Kotex won’t be getting the ax, even with 150 complains since the ads began airing earlier this year.

Research found that 90 per cent of women have a nickname for their genitals and “beaver” was one of 181 recorded. “We realised that was how they [women] were talking

“It was none of this stuff like running along beaches and riding horses,” said Mr Larkin, referring to euphemistic images used in sanitary pad ads. “We will stand out by being natural, is what we told them [the advertiser].”

Anastasia Barlas, divisional manager, adult and feminine care at Kimberly-Clark Australia, said of the campaign: “All we were doing was to try to make women feel comfortable about talking about their vaginas. The beaver is an icon that we created but it is too early to say … we need to see the concepts when they come back.”

Even though the campaign has driven Kotex’s share of the $250 million market by two share points to nearly 12 per cent in a year, don’t expect to see the ads in Europe or the Americas, as they feel it’s a very “Australian ad”.
