'Entertainment Weekly,' 'Essence' Start Layoffs

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Layoffs have descended at Entertainment Weekly and Essence, the latest Time Inc. magazines to deliver budget cuts demanded by the company. People, Sports Illustrated, Fortune and Time started seeking volunteers for buyouts this week, with plans for involuntary layoffs if not enough people raise their hands.

Old Classmates Are Just Worms On A Hook

Anthony Michaels of San Diego is bummed. He thought his classmates were trying to reconnect with him. That’s what the emails from Classmates.com said.

Michaels paid for a premium membership at Classmates.com but he now claims the firm was just fishing for business, and that there were no old friends from school on the other side of the transaction.

Sad, for sure. But also illegal, according to Michaels’ lawyer, Brian Kabateck. Michaels, who is seeking class-action status for his complaint, alleges misrepresentation, negligence, fraudulent concealment and violations of California’s business code.

Can Time's Person of the Year Be Anyone Other Than Obama?

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Time Magazine's annual "Person of the Year" debate revolved around the expected subject: the nation's — and arguably the world's — most decisively prominent story of the last 10 months.

Why Oh Why Honeyshed?

God knows if this code is going to work since the copy button gave me trouble. And yes, I know that we have a competition going on for reviews of Honeyshed, so I’ll keep this short.

I’ve got one question – why, why, why are the girls so fricking dumb? In the spot above, they are selling rugby shirts. Note to Honeyshed: it would be nice to focus more on the clothes and less on the girls performing extraneous tasks, like, um, counting money.

Girl one: “For all of you who don’t know what rugby is…”

Girl two: “Seriously. I don’t know what it is.”

And then, she goes on to example what rugby is. In detail. Like she’s talking to infants. Why is everything funneled through their boyfriends? The pink jeans? The lingerie episode where they have a fully clothed guy being all solicitous, while the girls stand around in their bras? Jesus. This is not for women in anyway shape or form. Just get rid of the ladies channel. Like now. You’re embarrassing yourselves.

I feel sick. Way to alienate women dudes. Way to fucking go. What a waste of a great concept.

What Will Happen (to the ad-world) if the Big 3 Fail?

fail1.jpg

Now that GM has asked everyone and their mother to contact lawmakers and urge them to support a federal bailout for the failing automaker, we thought it’d be a good time to ask you what you think will happen to the ad agencies that provide their marketing materials.

Chrysler is currently using a few entities to handle its brands: Jeep, belongs to San Francisco agency Cutwater. The shop also uses BBDO Detroit, which has already seen its share of cutbacks due to Chrysler’s financial woes. GM is buried deep within Campbell Ewald and a few other shops here and there (Mullen) and Ford is still with JWT.

Use the handy-dandy poll to tell us what you think will happen.

What will happen to the big 3’s agencies?

Has Kimbo Slice Lost His YouTube Mojo?

Kimbo Slice may not be the baddest mixed martial arts fighter anymore, but he's still the king of YouTube, right? Well, maybe not. A series of 11 stealth marketing videos for Nike featuring Slice and NFL star Ladainian Tomlinson, "Train Like LT with Kimbo Slice," haven't quite made the viral splash that Kobe Bryant or Ronaldinho did.

Anti-Christianity Ads Slated for D.C.

atheistad.jpg

Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan wrote today about an ad campaign slated to run in Washington D.C. which asks, “why believe in a god?” then states, “just be good for goodness sake”. Accompanying the copy is a picture of a black man with long hair who sports a Santa costume (glasses included). He looks at the camera with shoulders shrugged as snow flakes fall around him.

Click continued to see another ad from the campaign”, which is sponsored by The American Humanist Association and apparently cost a whopping $40k.
