People used in ads for Danish politicians on facebook without their permission, here we go again!

Anders Fogh Rasmussen – Liberal Party Leader in Denmark – uses his Facebook followers faces in ad campaigns to promote him says Politiken.dk.

The ads with Fogh in them pop up when you open the list of your friends, and typically carry a line like »NN is a fan of Anders Fogh Rasmussen – support Anders«.

The former editor David Trads is one of the unwilling “fans of Anders” used in the ads for Venstre, something he never gave permission for.

»I’m also a fan of Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Villy Søvndal on the net so I cover a big political spectrum. I have professional reasons for wanting to follow and see how the politicians use social media like facebook«, he said to Media Watch.

Now, I can’t find anything about this on this Media Watch here – newspapers that don’t link online sources quoted are a pain – but I did stumble on to another interesting story. Filleting Facebook at Media Watch abc.net.au where they are quite upset that a dead soldier family photo album was raided by journalists who printed the images in the newspapers.

For a start Facebook’s terms of use mean it owns all the material on Facebook pages. Those terms prohibit someone taking the material for commercial use. That’s called copyright law.

True, but have you considered this – perhaps the newspapers asked the new owners of those photographs copyright for permission. Don’t forget, facebook states that it owns your photos and can do anything they please with them.

Back to the social media ads that use your face without you even knowing about it: see previous story: On Facebook, your face can be used in ads (without you knowing it) via SocialMedia – this quite possibly the engine for the current Fogh ad campaign. I’d check, but youknow, I don’t have a facebook account. 😉

A Little Too Maverick-y For The Ad Business

Jack Myers, writing on The Huffington Post, thinks a McCain administration will severely impact the ad industry:

John McCain said last night, in the third Presidential debate, he plans to do away with the Defense Department Marketing Assistance Program. This is the Congressional spending allocation that enables the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, plus the National Guard, to advertise for recruits.

Senator Obama’s support for preventative medical care is another little noted but important key point of difference with Senator McCain that emerged from the debate. Under Obama it is far more likely that insurance plans will cover alternative medicine, including acupuncture, therapy, and government approved herbs and vitamins. This category alone could more than double the current spending by pharmaceutical companies, and would give a boost to local market media as Alternative Care centers compete with traditional medicine. Again, a McCain presidency is likely to bring this windfall to a screeching halt.

The conventional widsom has always been that Republicans are better for business in general. This year, that’s not holding up entirely, Joe The Plumber notwithstanding. I also heard a prominent 4A’s official say that Obama would be a better President for advertisers if he surrounded himself with the right people in his administration.

Shield your eyes from these ‘Porno’ posters

Zampostersmall_copy

First, the MPAA tried to slap Zach and Miri Make a Porno with a NC-17 rating, but Kevin Smith appealed and talked them into an R. Then, the MPAA gunned down the movie’s original poster (which hinted at oral sex), and Smith fought back with a delightful stick-figure rendering and the headline, “Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so titillating that we can only show you this drawing.” Now, even the stick-figure ads are being rejected, this time due to the word “porno.” At last count, some 15 newspapers, several TV stations, and the city of Philadelphia are refusing to carry the ads. As Rina Cutler, the deputy mayor of Philly, put it, “Zack and Miri cannot make a porno on my bus shelters.” Aw c’mon, Rina, it’s not like it’s the first porno Philly bus shelters have ever seen. Those shelters have been around the block. Smith is said to be considering an alternate stick-figure rendering with the line, “Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so outrageous that we can’t even tell you the title.”

David Gianatasio adds: The AP story also points out that TV spots for the movie that were airing during L.A. Dodgers games on Fox were dropped at the team’s request after some viewers complained. A team rep said the ads were pulled because “Dodgers baseball has always been about family.” We can assume he misspoke and meant to say that Dodgers baseball is about “losing.” Go Yanks in ’09!
