Google sullies its pristine site with G1 pitch

G1 copy
“New! The G1 phones are available now. Learn more.” So says the understated yet instantly compelling text promo on Google’s normally pitch-free homepage touting its Android-based smart phone. I clicked! (Check my cookies and find out, you privacy-snuffing maniacs!) Too bad G1’s service is from T-Mobile, which has dead zones the size of some red states. More to the point: I wonder if there’s any embarrassing footage of Sergey Brin using Apple’s iPhone. I’ll Google and find out. … OK, there’s no such incriminating evidence. And even if there were, it wouldn’t be so embarrassing, as Brin has talked up using Google Maps on the iPhone. (I learned this via Google, too.) My point: You can’t beat Google at it’s own game, and most red states are dead zones regardless of your cellular provider.

Potentially as awesome as someecards.

Baby

This is a book cover from the folks at breakingbadnewswithbabyanimals. Looks naughty and delicious. There is a very limited e-card functionality on the site with a few badnewsbaby missives you can send along to your friends, but hyping the book  is the main focus. A pity. Add the customizable functionality of someecards and it's easy to imagine these in the Internet sensation category with the potential to garner the authors more notice than the book itself. With the economy in tatters, I'm certain we all have use these.

Hat tip to Mr. Villhauer

So, now that we’re back – here’s a little music.

Hey kids and adgrunts all over. It’s been a rather painful week, moving back to the old server after our new servers disc comitted hara-kiri on us last week. Our old server wasn’t quite up for the job anymore and I’ve spent all night moving things to the new disc on the new server. Finally we’re back and can leave all those mysql-too-many-connections messages behind us.

Of course, as soon as we’re back we had spammers signs up and post crap, so I guess there’s our welcome back to the web for us. 😉

While I was chewing my nails and moving things, I listened to this to keep me calm. It’s more world music than anything else, and a bit on the bluesy side. Hope ya dig.

B&T Magazine Redesign

BTOCT24_COVER (2).JPG

I’m shocked that one of the weekly advertising mags here in Australia B&T has redesigned and refocused. It’s not fortnightly and it’s new format is much better. It’s actually got articles worth reading not just rehashed PR. The covers are actually creative and the layout and photography of features is spot on. I did feel B&T was slipping (as it became lighter each week) but this feels much more of a worthy read now.

Keep up the good work. The website didn’t receive as much of an overhaul but maybe that’s in the works?

The Skywriting’s The Limit

In Atlanta, when you’re stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, getting the hell out of dodge is an appealing notion. And AirTran Airways (which is very popular here) is pushing that idea with skywriting:

AirTran Airways is turning to skywriting in the Atlanta area this week to advertise a sale.

The Orlando-based airline, which has its main hub in Atlanta, hired a pilot to trace messages in the sky such as “AIRTRAN SALE” and “FLY AIRTRAN.” The skywriting ads started Tuesday and have run above the Georgia Dome, over downtown and in other parts around the metropolitan area. On Wednesday, AirTran planned to skywrite a message above the intersection of Highways 285 and 75 in the Cobb Galleria area at around 5 p.m.

“We wanted to get people talking about travel again,” said AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson. “We found that people are spending a lot of time talking about the election and the different parties and the platforms, and the economy.”

It’s an interesting idea, and probably one of the more effective outdoor techniques you can use, but awards-show obsessed creative directors would definitely think it’s a insult.

Jill Long Thompson has a Video Campaign Ad too!

Yesterday, we tackled how Democratic Assembly Candidate Alyson Huber released her 2 30-second ads. Now another candidate, Jill Long Thompson or JLT will be airing her TV campaign ad commercials as well starting Monday.

This will be her first TV campaign ad and it is quite intriguing to note what she will use as her campaign platform.

Deanna Russo: Personal Branding via Playboy

To many people including yours truly, Deanna Russo is a virtual unknown. But when you attach to her name that she is a former Playboy model, expect eyes to roll and take notice. To go with that, you may be surprised that she even has a role in the latest Knight Rider movie, portraying the role of Sarah Graiman, Knightrider’s girlfriend.

Russo has also appeared in several commercials such as Axe, Ford and Disney. She posed for Playboy in December 2007 as “Babe of the Month”. She has also had stints with Maxim and made some appearances in TV series such as CSI and Charmed.

Quite a resume for someone who only got noticed because it was discovered that she posed for Playboy in the past. Talk about personal branding coming late!
