Subliminal? Not If You’re On Their Network.

When Coffee Company in The Netherlands wanted to motivate all the wifi moochers in their midst to actually buy coffee and pastries, they turned to THEY for help. THEY, a new agency formed from the ribs of KesselsKramers and BBDO, came up with a pretty nice media placement idea.

An Internal PSA For Ogilvy

Shelly Lazarus wants her staffers to know that they need to vote. Yes, voting is a good thing, but internal PSA’s? Not such a good thing. You know all the employees at Ogilvy are going to vote and be out of the office for the entire afternoon. “Sorry! The voting line was like, so super long.” I can hear it now and good for them. Ogilvy works their employees to the bare bone.

On a side note, why oh why isn’t election day on a weekend? It should be held on a weekend. Sometimes, America is just back-asswards.

Breaking: Starbucks Giving Away Coffee So You’ll Vote

starbucks_cup.jpg

According to a high-level source, BBDO has produced a spot for Starbucks that will run tomorrow. The ad is Starbucks’ attempt to urge Americans to get out and vote on Tuesday. As a reward, they’re giving away a free cup of coffee to everyone who does so.

News of the spot, which comes today via a source close to the matter, is yet another indication that Starbucks will choose BBDO as its AoR. Recall that in late September, the coffee maker dropped incumbent W+K, and is increasingly under the gun to make a comeback. In a recent blind taste-test, Americans (according to Dunkin’ Donuts) chose DD coffee over Starbucks.

For Starbs, the giveaway may bring in some new shoppers, and for BBDO it’s a chance to show off their might &#151 and potentially lock-down the account (though we’ve received many anonymous tips indicating the deal is done). We’ve contacted Starbucks and BBDO, many times, in hopes of getting a confirmation but according to company representatives Starbucks has yet to make its decision.

Back To Razorfish… Lay ‘Em Off While Opening The Purse

UnfairLogo01.png
While Razorfish buys agencies in Spain, it’s laying off staffers in New York…

“Many companies, especially those in the financial services sector, have been hit hard by the economic crisis. This has had a direct impact on our business, particularly in New York. As a result, Razorfish needed to lay-off about 40 people today, about 2 percent of our national workforce.”

Okay look. It sucks that people are getting laid off in New York while agencies are being bought in foreign countries. It totally sucks and looks terrible on paper.

Here’s the thing – lets try and be nuanced about this… The US market is in the crapper. Salaries cost cash and that’s the bottom line. The agency, to survive in good standing, has made the belated, but smart move of looking overseas while the looking is still good. Meanwhile, the other hand is cutting staff Stateside. While some may want to cry bollocks, this is the nature of business in general. Some agencies are trying to stay afloat to keep the other employees receiving pay checks.

I will say that I wish they could have done a “everyone works 4 days rather than 5” type of thing, but hell, maybe it wasn’t possible. For those laid off – I’ll see you at the headhunter’s office? Maybe we can get some coffee and commiserate.
