Updated Exclusive: We hear McCann Erickson Detroit Won GM’s XM Account

“In regards to your recent story about the GM XM business in review at Campbell Ewald . . . it was in review with CE, Digitas, McCann Erickson and Modernista involved; the business was just awarded to McCann Erickson Detroit (Birmingham)”

Update: We’re in contact with McCann’s Detroit office, and are waiting for CEO (Gary Neel?) to get back to us.

And a note: We wonder what the XM/Sirius merger will mean for GM brand vehicles. Will they not be using the new Starmate radios? How’s it going to work? Maybe Gary can help us out.

From a tipster: “In regards to your recent story about the GM XM business in review at Campbell Ewald…it was in review with CE, Digitas, McCann Erickson and Modernista involved; the business was just awarded to McCann Erickson Detroit (Birmingham).”

What Would You Do if You Were Marketing VP for a Day?

Every once in a while, I play a cruel game. I pretend I'm the marketing VP of a large corporation with a nice budget and ask myself how I would evaluate an agency partner. Of course, that's what our clients are doing every day, but knowing the underside of agency operations adds another dimension to the game.

EuroRSCG Rips Off W+K London?

yakultads1.jpg

Beverage brand Yakult gave Wieden and Kennedy London $5M pounds in June 2006 to rebrand the brand as their AOR. Eighteen months later, the brand dropped the agency. Wieden was obviously upset posting on their blog that:

“But, to be honest, it’s not an opportunity, it’s a blow. It’s a bummer. It does not represent the dawning of a bold new era for W+K London.” And that, “It just shows how precarious this business is and that you can never get complacent.”

Isn’t that the truth? The brand is a bit of a liar. At first, they told W+K that they were putting the rest of Europe into review. Then, they put the UK business up. They also then said that they would be “creating a small roster of pan-European agencies, delivering an overarching European creative strategy.” They followed that statement up with let big dawgs JWT, Lowe and EuroRSCG slugging it out for the win with the latter taking it home.

The recent print ads for Yakult have given some of the kids at W+K London pause on the Welcome to Optimism blog. Why? Because they look exactly like the work the shop was turning out while the brand was under its auspice. Take a look above. Take a look below. Hmmm….

You Choose The Industry’s Most Powerful Players

billgates.jpg

Adweek will mark its 30th anniversary in November. Can you believe it? The birthday issue will be taking a look at the last 30 years of the business, while peering into the future.

“The centerpiece of the issue will be a photographic portfolio featuring Adweek’s selection of 30 of the most influential people working in advertising, marketing and media today – people whose work has reshaped the business, and whose vision will be felt broadly across those industries for years to come.”

So ladies and gentlemen – who deserves to be on that list? You only get 30. The contenders are listed after the jump. The usual suspects are on there. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg (no), Wieden + Kennedy Dan Wieden (yes), GroupM’s Irwin Gotlieb (possibly), YouTube’s Chad Hurley (yes), et al. Right now, Alex Bogusky is kicking ass with 39 votes.

Go vote over at the Adweek website. Another question – from the list after the jump, who do you think Adweek failed to acknowledge?

Obama Gains Support of White T-Shirts and Alphabet

Spelling Change.com

SpellingChange dot com is a new Web site that puts the creation of collaborative art (pro-Obama campaign materials) in the hands of y’all. Cool right? Need a bumper sticker, t-shirt, banner ad, etc. that is sure to be branded in a recognizable way? SpellingChange has got the hooksup.

Here’s how it works. A bunch of artists et cetera were asked to create artsy letters of the alphabet. Said letters were then printed on t-shirts, which were then put on people who posed for pics.

The letters and their t-shirt doppelgangers were put into a cool algorithm on SpellingChange dot com. They even made the thing embeddable! Check out the one we made above about ad placement!

From the site: “Spelling Change was developed by a group of creative professionals to spread awareness and passion about the Obama campaign. Its goal is to encourage one-to-one communication by creating tools that help people get out the word on issues that are important to them.”

The Bad Loan That Took Down Athletic World Advertising

71014_MoneyHappiness_vl-vertical.jpg

Staffers at Athletic World Advertising of Fayetteville and Tulsa might be getting some good news. Could it be? Could it just be a good news kind of day?

The more than 100 employees who lost their jobs after the sports promotions company closed its doors on Wednesday, have woken to news that the shop has been purchased by, Game On Advertising, which may provide a home for those laid off.

Check this out – the whole thing is as seedy as the financial crisis. You see, Brick Wade Ogden, the brother of Athletic World Advertising, took a loan out against the company. He owes $745,947 to The Bank of Fayetteville with the debt in default. Brick “reportedly sold his shares to the company before relocating out of the country a few years ago.” Um, without paying the loan. Oh, it’s ugly as hell.

Also, interesting is the President of Game On is a guy named Mark McQueen. He also was the former president of Athletic World Advertising. Now you know McQueen is somewhere loving that he gets to buy out his old employer. Success is the best revenge. Always.

Obama Camp Drops $2 Million on 30-Minute Prime-Time Slots

WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) — TV-buying executives say Sen. Barack Obama's buy of a half hour of ad time on CBS and NBC will cost the campaign between $2 million and $2.5 million. They report the Obama campaign paid in the range of $1 million per network to buy time for an Oct. 29 program. The campaign has so far declined to discuss the content it will air from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that night or even say whether the programming will be live.

YouTube Adds Full-Length CBS Content

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — YouTube has partnered with CBS to air full-length TV shows, starting today. For now a select group of old and new shows will appear, including "MacGyver," the original "Star Trek" and "Beverly Hills 90210," the season premieres of Showtime's "Dexter" and "Californication," and current episodes of "The Young and the Restless."

Network Television Still Offers A Massive Prime Time Audience

When John McCain considered skipping out on the first debate, I thought, that’s interesting, I wonder if Obama can just take the entire 90 minutes.

As we now know, McCain decided to show up and he’s likely to show up again for the third debate next week. Yet, Obama wants the viewers’ full attention, and he has the cash to buy it. According to The New York Times, Obama’s campaign is dipping into its war chest to buy up blocks of network airtime.

Officials at the Obama campaign and at several television networks said Thursday that Mr. Obama had completed deals to show a half-hour program about his candidacy on CBS and NBC on Wednesday, Oct. 29, less than a week before Election Day. The campaign is also talking to ABC and Fox about similar deals, though the potential of a World Series Game 6 may make that impossible on Fox.

It was an extraordinary move illustrating the spending flexibility Mr. Obama enjoys as his campaign raises huge sums outside of the restrictive campaign finance system, which imposes spending limits in return for matching federal money.

The last Presidential candidate to run an informercial was Ross Perot in 1992.

Hadley Green: A Bright Spot In A Dark Climate

hadleygreen.jpg

Thank heavens! Some good news is coming out of an ad agency. Seattle based shop, Hadley Green Creates, has received accolades for increasing their business by 25%.

The agency added John Rubino as managing director in 2007 and attribute much of their new business to his leadership. Rubino came from NBBJ and before that, Landor Associates.

Hadley Green Creates is a ad/marketing firm led by Cameron Green, Dick Hadley, as well as Rubino. Launched in 1977, (when it was called Kobasic Hadley & Co.) the agency has a client roster including Columbia Bank, Microsoft, Seattle Chocolates and Intel. Bully to Hadley Green.

Now the rest of us? Citi Investment Research noted today that the ad spend from the top 100 global advertisers will be essentially flat, at .03 percent in 2009. Sigh. Big. Sigh.
