Campbell-Ewald LA Not Closing, Says Rep.

China_Prinz_Chun_bei_W2.jpg

We reported earlier today that Campbell-Ewald recently pulled out of the Farmers Insurance pitch (the client was up for review as of late July). A call to the agency’s Warren, Mich. office revealed that, “Campbell-Ewald is not participating in the review,” according to agency representative Mark Benner.

OK, so this isn’t super newsy, since they stepped out of the deal a few weeks ago. It is important to note, however, that this means CE is down to a handful of big dog clients. GM, their biggest, is still going the way of the proverbial, “fart in the wind”.

There is hope for the LA agency though, said Benner, which is currently hustling for insurance broheim Kaiser Permanente. Per Benner, the KP biz has not been shifted back to Warren &#151 though it does go back and forth from time to time.

Kind of a moot situation for CE &#151 which is still scrambling to win new clients. Who isn’t. Story over.

There are so many reasons to launch a consumer-generated media campaign. They save money and think time, encourage brand appropriation, and are pretty easy to sell to a client.

Time Out appoints Mark Elliott as new MD

LONDON – Time Out, the city-centric listings magazine, has promoted publisher Mark Elliott to the role of managing director, with a seat on the board, ahead of a strategic review of the business.

There’s No “I” In Team

Court Crandall, founder of Ground Zero, believes in looking for “players with character.” He describes two such “players” in a touching piece published in Adweek.

The longer you do this job, the more you find that doing good work is the price of entry and it’s all the other stuff that separates the folks you really like from the ones you can’t live without.

In 15 years of owning Ground Zero, there haven’t been many folks who regularly beat me to the office in the morning. Noah Clark (who is moving to Boulder to work for Crispin) was one of them. It should also be noted that he was often the last to leave at night, if he left. I don’t say this to glamorize long hours or a sweatshop mentality, but to point out that he typically wasn’t burning the midnight oil or the pre-dawn oil to better his portfolio, but to make a presentation look a little better, work on the agency new business materials or polish an ad that was still a little too rough around the edges for his liking. This kind of dedication earned him the moniker “The Cleaner” from Laura Eastman, our head of account services. Like Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction, Noah was the guy who fixed things, no matter how screwed up they might have been when someone dumped them in his lap. When another art director left on vacation, Noah picked up the slack. When another team dropped the meat in the dirt, he picked up the pieces.

Selflessness is not exactly a common trait in this business. Hence, there’s an opportunity to stand out by being selfless.

Pesach Lattin: ‘I am extremely worried about the industry’

2da8c47.jpg

A good friend of ours forwarded the e-mail you see below. Our friend said he/she isn’t sure how he/she ended up being on Pesach Lattin‘s e-mail list, but nonetheless what you’re about to read showed up in all its scared, ranty goodness. Please for to enjoy (and a note &#151 we formatted the copy, because it came through as one giant ugliferous block).

“I wanted to send everyone a quick note, after thinking a little bit about the economy and how it is going to affect the industry. Nothing really that deep, and perhaps you get nothing from it. However, it seemed appropriate considering all that is going on. Perhaps you don’t really care what I have to say, but perhaps you’ll find this at least interesting and send me a note back. I’d appreciate it.

(Ed’s note: it’s not very interesting…)

First of all, thank God(ess) that Vizi is in a great situation. We are a small company, with a large network &#151 great revenues and a great hardworking team. While a lot of other companies have spent ridiculous amounts of money attempting to expand, we have been slim, kept low overhead while having constant growth each year. This past year we made a lot of changes and because of this, we keep on growing, little by little each month.

There’s a ton more, after the jump.

Watch out for your wayward lovesick fridge

In this Guinness ad from Irish International BBDO, an entire city’s refrigerators come unglued, flying violently out of their homes, compelled by obsessive magnetic forces to stick to the outsides of a Guinness truck. Upon viewing the ad, you might conclude that Guinness is unsafe to drink. After all, who wants to take a fridge to the guts after a quiet happy-hour pint? Then again, maybe Guinness is concerned with the greater good—this could be part of a devious refrigerator recycling program.

Maybe Hanes, not MJ, needs a new sidekick

Jordansheen_copy
Thanks to daytime TV, I get to see Sarah Chalke shake her ass about 12 times an hour to prove that Hanes won’t ride up my crack. But it wasn’t until this weekend that I witnessed Michael Jordan and Charlie Sheen’s Hanes-inspired shenanigans (which, yes, have been airing for a while). Spots by The Martin Agency here. The premise seems to be that Michael Jordan is awesome and other people are totally into talking underwear with him. Michael is there all like, “You people are crazy.” Shockingly, this has been going on longer than Jordan has been retired. Before Sheen (chosen by Hanes despite the nuclear press fallout after his divorce from Denise Richards), there was Cuba Gooding Jr., and before Cuba was Kevin Bacon, Matthew Perry, Jackie Chan and … oh my God, Jordan has been endorsing Hanes since 1993. Which means I must have seen a Michael Jordan Hanes commercial before now. Thing is, I can’t remember a single one. I remember Michael with Nike, Gatorade, Ball Park Franks and Wheaties. So either Hanes is doing a breathtaking job targeting men’s shows, or his Airness has oversaturated himself by endorsing too many brands. All I’m saying is, maybe it’s time they got their Hanes on someone else.
