Hyundai Leaves Goodby In the Dust

Ad Age has the story:

Hyundai dealers were unhappy with Goodby’s cerebral “Think About It” campaign, the executives said. Also, Hyundai’s president-CEO, Jong Eun Kim, who arrived in January, was losing patience that the agency’s work for the $80 million launch of the new upmarket Genesis sports sedan wasn’t working, one of the executives said.

Hyundai introduced the Genesis to the U.S. market during this year’s Super Bowl even though the car, with a base price of $33,000, wasn’t arriving in showrooms until June.

I can’t say I’m surprised. The car business is tough these days, but when I started seeing ads comparing Hyundai cupholders to Mercedes cupholders, I knew things were mismarketed. Hyundai is gunning for Toyota, period, end of story. It’s not hard to figure out.

To Whoever Gets This Account Next: Hire me. Seriously. I own an ’07 Santa Fe. And bought it after I comparison shopped. I can tell you how to market these cars, and I’ll be happy to help you do it.

Microsoft Gets Pharrell Williams To Lie For Them

And the Microsoft “Life Without Walls” narrative is rolling along with the latest Cripsin Porter+ launching some time tonight. It opens with a PC man who says, “Hi, I’m a PC, and I’ve been made into a stereotype.”

polaroids.jpg

The spot then features all of the super cool celebrities who got paid to say that they use a PC like Deepak Chopra, Eva Longoria and Pharrell Williams. Okay, maybe Eva uses a PC, but Williams? I mean… he uses an iPhone. He’s also on record, like, a billion times in interviews talking about his iPod (example). His store, Billionaire Boys Club, blogs about Apple’s incredible design. Yes, he did some HP spots, but um… dude uses a MAC, too. Watch the video above. He says he’s a MAC guy in it!!! Maybe for total brand loyalty CP+B/Microsoft should have paid him more. Dear Mr. Williams: “If you’re going to be a spokeswhore, watch out for the internet! It’ll get ya’ every time!”

This sort of “brand-fights-back” work is a CP+B specialty. They do it well (except for vetting the spokespeople apparently). Burger King anyone? Some of the kids (the geeks who game, the college students) might feel empowered about their brand of choice, the PC, after these spots begin to air. Nod to the planner on that one. It’s about the kids damnit! Yet, consider that my Mom totes sweats Deepak, but she already uses a PC and doesn’t feel at all bad about it. So, why didn’t they pay off another cool kid or pouty mouth celeb? No idea. Still, it’s the brand fighting back and that’s a very good thing.

Why didn’t they just skip all the Seinfeld madness and jump straight into the smart, messaging? Remains to be seen. I’d love to see this ad. If you’ve got a copy on your desktop please do send to superspyin at gmail dot com. I’ll owe you one, like, forever.

Advertisers of Whom You Weren’t Aware

best_in_show_winners_serve.jpg

When it comes to U.S. advertising, most of us refer to the four major hubs; New York, LA, Chicago and Minneapolis. But what we forget about is…the rest of the country. Frankly, it’s easy to do since they don’t always make as much noise. But today we honor the United Adworkers Local 208, aka the Milwaukee ad club, whose community is rife with creative goodness, practices the martini lunch (OK, we made that up), and definitely knows good work when they make it.

Last week, Milwaukee’s addies celebrated the past year of “hard work” done in their respective shops during the annual ‘Milwaukee 99’ award show (think One Show, without the attitude), an event distinct in its tacit debauchery, inside jokes and great work.

The piece you see above won “Best in Show”. Created by downtown pro-bono shop Serve (staffed heavily by volunteer addies from BVK), “One Shot” was produced for the District Attorney of Milwaukee. Serve, as its name suggests, is a shop that works solely with clients whose goal is to help others. See addies, it’s not all about the money.

We know Milwaukee well, since we spent some time there pre-NYC. In fact, we even did some work on a previous award show way-back-when &#151 on a very small scale. We’re happy to see it (and Milwaukee’s ad biz) flourish, and hope you are too. Kudos to you Serve, and all the Milwaukee 99 winners.

Check out the “Best in Show” creds, after the jump.

With U.S. Economy Reeling, Advertisers Pin Hopes on Emerging Markets

HONG KONG (Adage.com) — The disastrous jolt to U.S. financial markets is putting pressure on multinational marketers to do well in big emerging markets such as China and India to offset the sluggish U.S. economy. Those markets are still growing, but if demand for Asian-made products drops significantly, consumer spending in Asia could dry up, too.

Goodby Loses Hyundai

toyota.jpg
We knew it. We couldn’t prove it though. Sigh. Get the full story here.

Goodby has been around for twenty-five years and in that time, they’ve had their share of auto accounts. They had Isuzu for ten years. They had Saturn for five. And now, Hyundai. After one year. Which we called ages ago.

The rumor on the street is the Goodby just ain’t no good at cars anymore. Maybe it’s true or maybe it’s just an anxious brand jumping ship in the face of a very, scary, economy.
