Wall Street Meltdown Spikes Ratings at Financial News Media

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Last week's Wall Street fiasco turned bad news into good news for several media companies. A study from independent media agency Horizon Media finds that CNBC, CNN and The New York Times, among others, saw some of their biggest ratings and online-traffic spikes in the hours and days following the Sept. 14 news of Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy and Bank of America's purchase of American International Group.

First-Half Ad Spending Declines

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — No matter which way you slice it, the first six months of 2008 have been a disappointing two quarters for everyone. Total measured ad spending declined by 1.6% in the first half of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007, according to TNS Media Intelligence. The second quarter alone was down 3.7% over last year, marking the biggest quarterly drop since 2001.

Berlin Cameron Loses Silk Soy Milk

Two days ago, I wrote that Berlin Cameron still had Silk Soy Milk. I was wrong.

After speaking with the Silk’s public relations time, I’ve realized that Berlin is off the account. The last work the agency created for the brand took place in April 2008. The campaign was called “Take A Sip Forward.” What happened in the intervening months? The old stand by regarding the “Boys Club” in New York is that they are great a hyper-cool, culturally hip campaigns. Forget about the mass brands. It ain’t there thing.

Silk spent $25 million-plus on media last year, up from $22 million in 2006, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus. The new agency has yet to be named. Stay tuned.

Bizarre ‘Gold’ Rushes – Whale Poop Bonanza for New Zealanders?

DraftFUCBUH’s Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 Spot = Sweet

Every once in awhile, the deathstars come up with something interesting. This spot, by DraftFCB, is fun to watch. From where you’re sitting, it may seem annoying, redundant, and sexually charged. But it doesn’t matter what you think, it matters what the people who have been waiting for the next C&CRA think. We think they’ll love this spot.

The latest trailer had to meet a certain standard &#151 due in part to the game’s fame and in another part to the super-sweet Mercenaries 2 (“Oh No You Didn’t”) spot that released a few weeks back. The two will probably go neck and neck into the holidays, although Mercenaries will likely outsell.

DraftFCB (that “FCB” part is pronounced ‘FUCBUH’) culled some major talent for “Remix”, including Jenny McCarthy, Gemma Atkinson, George Takei, Jonathan Pryce, Andrew Divoff, Peter Stormare, Tim Curry, JK Simmons, Kelly Hu, Autumn Reeser, and Ivana Milisevic &#151 each of whom play characters in the game. “It was created in partnership with famous audio visual remix artist C.B. Shaw.,” according to a source.

We wonder if the above mentioned celebs are really “World of Warcraft” fans. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? Check out more spots from this campaign, after the jump.

WSJ Picks McGarry Bowen

wsjmag.jpg

McGarry Bowen beat out Publicis, Deutsch, Mullen and Trahan Burden & Charles for the WSJ account. The paper is technically, expanding their relationship with the agency. The shop will be in charge of creative campaigns for the brand and all of its properties including that horrible new Wall Street Journal magazine.

In other McGarry Bowen news, the shop lost Lyle Tick, a group managing director, who had been in charge of some big accounts including Reebok, Brahma beer and Verizon to Gotham. They also lost out on Philly Cream Cheese, which Nitro took home.

My question is – when is Reebok going to leave McGarry Bowen behind? The brand’s new plan to make fitness fun for women is ridiculous. Where are the planners? That “Run Easy” campaign was total bunk. Sigh.

Reebok is owned by Adidas. I don’t understand how Adidas can kick so much ass, while Reebok slumbers through the consumer market. Oh, well perhaps it’s because of CEO Richard Prenderville (who we hear is difficult). Or, maybe it’s because of the advertising agency. I’m guessing it’s a whole lot of both.

DraftFCH Singapore: Where all the Pimps and Hos at (Yo)!

Arent we ladies sexy.jpg

Hey ad-world. We came to work this a.m. to find a link waiting for us on our desktop, and here’s where it led. DraftFCB Singapore dressed up like pimps and hos, and ran through a mall in the name of building camaraderie.

We agree with out tipster, who writes, “I don’t even know what to say with this.”

Maybe we’re just feeling lazy ‘cuz our thumbs are still throbbing from laying two coats of paint on the new apartment last night (til 5 a.m. &#151 damn we’re tired), but something about this story feels tots wrong.

From the original story: “We did this for a laugh and also to build a better relationship between staff and team members. It was fun. When you have daily work pressures and deadlines to meet, it is nice to do something really different and daring, sometimes,” said someone. Take it away, George!

From Wendy’s To An Advertising Firm

391-bn-20080924-B008-oldwendystobene-149926-MI0001.embedded.prod_affiliate.50.jpg

There’s also this chatter about Buffalo being the new spot of choice for New Yorkers burnt on the Big Apple. It’s raw, almost deserted and a creative’s play land. Apparently. Naturally, an article about The Tod Martin Group taking over a defunct Wendy’s caught my eye this morning.

The shop will spend $750,000 on a complete exterior and interior renovation. Tod’s, the agency’s namesake, has got the cash. His shop is the premier marketing and advertising firm in Buffalo with clients such as New Era Cap Co., the Buffalo Sabres and Hodgson Russ LLP. Kudos to Tod and his 22 person staff. The reinvention of Buffalo is going to take one bold step at a time.
