Breaking: Citibank To Buy Wachovia? Ogilvy, Brace Thy Self.

wallstbloodbath.jpg

Citibank is rumored to be in talks to purchase Wachovia. If you’re just tuning in, Ogilvy just won the Wachovia account in a shoot out against Y&R. Media is estimated at $150M. Now, of course estimates are always a little off and in the case of Wachovia, whose stock priced took a nose dive today, it’s would be way off.

Let us consider… Yesterday,Washington Mutual got snapped up by JPMorgan, a mcgarrybowen client. All WAMU branches will be now be rebranded as Chase banks. So, what…? Citibank eat this latest big banking turd and then what? No more Wachovi equals no need for Ogilvy’s services?

Also, as a reader astutely wrote us, it could go another way: “Citibank and Amex hate each other. Amex is Ogilvy’s largest client. Ogilvy loses Wachovia before they even get started. Can’t make this stuff up. “

And out goes Ogilvy’s big win. Just like that and no, you can’t make this stuff up. It could all be over for Ogilvy in a matter of days. You see… the world market wanted to invest its oodles of dough. The big money fund had taken a leap in the billions range as third world economies went first; China came online, etc, etc. Consumers, stupidly, took the bait of risky mortgages. The fat cats wanted to make cash off the world market come hell or high water, so they just went for it. Blindly. VPs lied to their computers. Loan officers fudged documents. The unbelievably ridiculous concept of the ‘No income, No asset’ loan became de riguer. The logic in the banking business quickly became “if my competitor is doing it I gotta do it too. Even if I know this is risky and ethically not sound.” They were all followers. It was high school and it was good until these callow fucks realized that it was out of control. That loan holders, banks, the market, the players in the game – they were all out of control and the numbers were beginning to reflect that very grim reality… I think I’m going to be sick.

And it all comes tumbling down right now. And that is how Ogilvy can seriously lose their big win. All you cats who said advertising wouldn’t be affected? Give me a break. Greed always gets its man and then some.

I Blog, Therefore I Earn

Tech journalist, Sarah Lacy, on why she doesn’t run ads on her blog:

Until I could find an advertising vehicle that valued my audience as much as I do, blogging would just be a loss leader for me—a hub for everything else I was doing and a way to solidify myself as a thought leader. After all, isn’t a decade of industry experience and contacts worth more than pennies a click? BusinessWeek, Yahoo, or any organization that pays me to speak certainly thinks so. Why should I value myself any less?

That term “loss leader” is interesting. It sounds like an oxymoron, of sorts.

I agree with Lacy that blogging’s real value (for most) is not found in ad revenue, but rather in reputation building. Yet, I’m not sold that AdPulp is a “loss leader” for my personal brand. I’m looking for more of a win-win from this site. I’d like to increase revenue and find exciting speaking, writing and consulting gigs.

Interestingly, the other day, Fred Wilson mentioned Technorati’s “State of the Blogosphere” report and how it suggests bloggers are pulling in $75K+ in revenue when their sites have 100,000 or more unique visitors per month.

Wilson balked at that analysis, as do I. AdPulp makes but a fraction of that figure. For sure, we need to court more sponsors, but even then I see us gradually raising revenue. Gradual or not, we do want to raise revenue. So, if you’d like to speak intelligently to the influencers gathered here, let me or Shawn know. We’ll get you a good rate and even better exposure.

We’re All Thumbs

I don’t doubt these figures on mobile usage from C|NET and Neilsen, but I do find them somewhat stunning.

For the second quarter of 2008, U.S. mobile subscribers sent and received on average 357 text messages per month, compared with making and receiving 204 phone calls a month, according to Nielsen.

In the first quarter of 2006, Americans sent and received 65 text messages per month. The number of messages sent and received today has increased 450 percent.

The surge in text messaging is being driven by teens 13 to 17 years old, who on average send and receive about 1,742 text messages a month.

That last fact is less hard to believe and a good explanation for the growth of texting.

Employment at Portland Advertising & PR Agencies Has Grown 37 Percent from 2003 to 2007

pdx_mtn_hood.jpg

I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel Timothy Wood, Digital Strategy Director at PMSI, over coffee this morning at Jace Gace on SE Belmont.

He mentioned a recent article in The Oregonian that lists several creative firms who have opened shop in Portland, some specifically to serve Adidas.

The latest newcomers include Chicago marketing firm Tangible Worldwide and Boise-based Fuel3 Advertising, which announced its entry into the market Wednesday. They join San Jose, Calif.-based Liquid Agency Inc. and Salt Lake City’s Struck Inc.; Struck opened a Portland office in October; Liquid did so in July.

“This is a proactive move,” said Tangible’s chief executive, who goes by the single name of Merrick. “More than anything, this office is for talent, because we are in need of talent more so than clients.”

The search for digital talent is a subject we hear a lot about. I, for one, keep hearing how hard it is to find seasoned digital creatives. Yet, here I am, a seasoned digital creative in a new city, wondering which firm might be a good fit for me.

Maybe someone will come find me, but I don’t believe that now anymore that I believed Goodby was going to find me when I worked in Salt Lake or Denver. Just like before, it’s incumbent on me—the seeker—to beat a path to the most interesting people and firms.

An Ad Guy’s Laundry

I just spent some time catching up on Steffan Postaer’s recent posts to his blog, Gods of Advertising.

Here’s some of what I picked up:

  • Creatives can be an insecure lot.
  • Agencies need to reinvent themselves, sometimes every six to eight weeks.
  • Steffan thinks the Caddilac spot with Kate Walsh is trying too hard.
  • Steffan has a PR associate at Euro RSCG/Chicago look at his some of his posts before publishing them.
  • Steffan wonders if siding with the suits at his agency is a treasonous act (for a writer).

One thing I enjoy about Gods of Advertising–even when I disagree with the POV offered–is how candid and personal Steffan gets. It’s basically the opposite of what I do here. Only on the rarest of occasions do I share information about the agency or clients I work for. Sometimes I feel like I’m proof that you can have a social media obsession and still remain a private person.
