Churro?
Posted in: UncategorizedCrispin Porter + Bogusky’s new work for Microsoft is on the air and being written about by The Wall Street Journal, among others.
The Journal found someone to bash it:
“Despite this attempt to be cool, the commercial does nothing to change Microsoft’s brand image, says Leslie Smolan, chief strategy officer at Carbone Smolan Agency, a New York-based branding firm.
“It’s big, it’s got deep pockets — certainly deep enough to buy any celebrity it wants,” Ms. Smolan said. “What it doesn’t have is creativity, the key ingredient Microsoft has always lacked.”
TechCrunch went another way and obtained an internal email from Microsoft SVP, Bill Veghte, about the commercial.
Today, we are kicking off a highly visible advertising campaign. The first phase of this campaign is designed to engage consumers and spark a new conversation about Windows – a conversation that will evolve as the campaign progresses, but will always be marked by humor and humanity.
Think of these ads as an icebreaker to reintroduce Microsoft to viewers in a consumer context. Later this month, as the campaign moves into its next phase, we’ll go much deeper in telling the Windows story and celebrating what it can do for consumers at work, at play and on-the-go.
My thought is the frat boys in Boulder snuck their patented collegiate humor in at the end, by getting the richest man in the world to “adjust his shorts.” That must be the “humanity” Veghte is talking about.

Posted in: Uncategorized
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — "Fringe," a new sci-fi drama that has its debut Sept. 9 on Fox, relies on lots of farfetched ideas and spurious technologies as the basis of its stories. One intriguing notion the program will introduce isn't crazy at all. The show is expected to run all season with fewer ads than a normal network program, and Fox is charging more than usual for them.

Posted in: UncategorizedJust three short months after being named CMO of MillerCoors, Andy England has been given the (prestigious?) title of “Grand Marketer of the Year” from BrandWeek.
On a personal level, we’ve bought more Miller than Coors in the last three months. But we’ve also bought more Tennessee Sour Mash than Miller, Coors, Bud, and all higher beer forms in the last two weeks than in those same three monts. Hmmm…guess we’re not MC’s target audience.
See the full list of winners, after the jump. The above image created by Art Director Andrew Slopes aka “at-slopes”. See more of his stuff, here.

Magazine Schmagazines From Toy New York
Posted in: UncategorizedThe magazine industry is trying hard to get your media buy dollars – again. A new advertising campaign from Toy New York is supposed to do just that by highlighting that consumers are influenced by the ad pages they see. The campaign will debut on September 8.
So, what do you think? Are you considering taking a second look at magazines with their well deserved lower than low circulation numbers?

Posted in: UncategorizedDraftFCB Cans Chris Becker, Says Delaney via AdScam
Posted in: UncategorizedAccording to George Parker, this will appear in tomorrow’s Delaney Report.
Where in the world is Howard Draft? The question is being asked as Draft/FCB, the ad agency headed by Howard and owned by the Agency Holding company, Interpublic Group, continues to be hit by trouble.
Latest DFCB disturbance: DFCB’s troubled New York office is in the process of giving its creative chief, Chris Becker his walking papers.
IPG, in fact, is in the final stages of negotiations with a Becker replacement to oversee creative for the sagging DFCB/NY office. Becker’s expected ouster comes as DFCB/NY has turned in a lackluster new business performance, is suffering from low morale, and has been laying off staffers in big numbers.
Whoever comes in, however; will face a number of issues. The problem is that (DFCB President) Laurence Boschetto is running (DFCB) for Howard and he can’t get along with the creative people — his reputation is well known now.
People feel that he’s in over his head. And that’s causing problems. If you talk to (agency review) consultants, they will tell you that (DFCB’s) presentations are horrible, said one IPG executive Added an IPG executive, the real problem is that Howard is not engaged in the agency. He could do a lot of things with the agency if he wasn’t running off to Europe with his girlfriend. And it comes at a time when the
(DFCB) New York and Chicago offices are fighting with each other.

The First Advertising Hedge Fund
Posted in: UncategorizedIn August, MDC Partners announced the formation of Varick Media Management, which is the first company that allows media trading in real time across all online exchanges, ad networks and websites. This is part of kirshenbaum bond + partners, by the way. From the website:
“Similar to the way that hedge funds pool investment and algorithmically trade, we’d like to think we are extremely similar. Instead of investing in the financial markets, we’re investing our clients money within the media markets aiming to return a very solid ROI for each individual client. Think of us as the first advertising hedge fund.”
They’ve even coined a new term – Mediatrage, which describes the algorithmics and stats they use to trade media. Using some fancy math and partnerships with Google / DoubleClick AdX, Yahoo! RightMedia, Microsoft AdECN, AOL Spot Market, et al., Varick is looking to be a real player. Whether it will work? Remains to be seen, but isn’t it nice how they’re messing with the status quo.
Somewhere GroupM’s Meyer Lansky aka Irwin Gottlieb is mulling this over and is like, “why didn’t I think of that?”
