Esquire Unveils E-Ink Digital Cover

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Esquire began planning for its 75th-anniversary issue a year ago, and that's when it began to explore how to make the October issue a look into the future rather than a guide to the past. And it took 16 months to coordinate all of the processes and people who had to be involved to produce the first E-Ink cover and ad.

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — A cottage industry has cropped up around optimizing and analyzing online video and, increasingly, that industry includes YouTube, where every minute, 10 hours of video is uploaded. The company has introduced a suite of tools that provides more clues into how people find videos and what they do once they find them.

A Rant From Our Nicholson Kovak Spy

“Nicholson Kovac in KC is flushing itself down the tolite [sic]. At the annual meeting Pete Kovac made fun of one of the local clients to all the staff. Saying that it is the worst client they have ever had. Then he has asked us to stay after work to brainstorm with him on how we can get new biz in the shop. Whatever happend [sic] to hiring an actor to make new biz calls. We are not even close to project to breaking even this year. We wonder why he is firing all of his management team except for a couple of the butt kissers who are causing this agency to spiral out of control. We are on our 5th CD in the last ten years. Back in July Pete had a major cow on being ranked ninth in the KC ad community. Pete believes that all of the other agencies lied about their billing and that he projects us to be ranked 4th in the market. Inside sources have told Wme [sic] that our major media account has cut all of its tradional [sic] budget. The other rumor we have heard is the Pete is looking at selling the agency to an outside company while he still has something to sell.”

Post-Labor Day Growth Planning

I've always believed the week after Labor Day is the toughest week of the year. Here are five easy things you can do to propel your agency ahead, and make it a more successful year.

Studiocom ATL Drops 18

We hinted last Friday that we were informed of impending layoffs at Studiocom, Atlanta. Straight from the tips box, the word is that 18 lost their jobs in total.

Poor souls &#151 hopefully they won’t end up at Google. Or maybe we’re wrong and they should want to be there. Either way, in May, SC’s CEO was named the AMA’s marketer of the year. Other than that, the shop has been quiet as hell. Guess that explains the layoffs.

Brand Tags’ Noah Brier: How My Website Took Off

About six months ago, in the middle of the night, I had a very simple idea: If brands exist in people's heads, as I believe they do, then shouldn't you be able to ask a whole bunch of people what they think of a brand and then use tag clouds to display the results? After flipping the idea around in my brain for a few minutes, I decided it was a good enough reason to jump out of bed and make it happen.

“Facial-Cleanser-Cum-Makeup-Remover-Cum-Acne-Remedy” Sold to Alberto-Culver Co.

(Ed’s note: ‘Great Balls of Comfort,’ Farrah Fawcett and cream make a great marketing combination, don’t they?)

AgAge’s Jack Neff made a good point a few months back when he pointed out that Noxzema was under appreciated by parent company P&G.

Today, we learned that P&G has sold the once uber-successful brand to Alberto-Culver Co., which also owns brands like Tresemme, Nexxus, St. Ives, VO5, and others.

Note that the entirety of the brand hasn’t been sold off &#151 just the biz int he U.S., Canada and Latin America. But we all know Europeans don’t bathe anyway, so we feel Alberto Culver made the right choice.
