Google Assigns TV Ads to NBC Universal

In another daring move, it seems that Google TV is hell-bent in making a statement as far as being able to garner a wider area of scope, this time around targeting the cable television market when it commissioned NBC Universal to handle all the TV advertising on selected cable channels.

So with such a strategy, it looks like Google TV ads can look forward to better days ahead as it is not primarily relying on actual people who frequent the Internet. There are people who do not use the Internet that much and the next best medium to look out for would have to be the TV audience, a powerful medium in advertising that is bound to reach millions of people all over the globe.

“With the addition of NBC Universal inventory, advertisers using the Google TV Ads platform can reach NBCU Cable’s national audience and gain access to viewership data at an unprecedented scale,” NBC Universal and Google said in a statement.

The partnership will focus on TV channels Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth, and Chiller, with the possibility of adding more channels in the future, the companies said.

Extreme Ads from Southwest Airlines

These days, it would not be surprising to see most companies, airlines in this case, to produce commercials from various angles. Apparently, SouthWest airlines is catering to its market on two perspectives, for the budget conscious and the attention seeking advertisements.

Here are two ads that mostly focus on their fees and no-hidden charges for the conventional flyer. With both advertisements being used to lure in the consumers, they are bound to have better chances to catering towards the different market classes in the world today.

Check out their two contrasting advertising styles:

Pictoplasma NYc – Characters in Rhythm

The New York edition of Pictoplasma was as successful as possible: great programme, fantastic speakers and performances and audience getting jaw-ache from constant grinning.

Performance by Friends With You

Peter Thaler & Lars Denicke started to get interested in characters ten years ago. They were fascinated by the very anti-Pixar essence of these characters: they have no background, no purpose nor story to tell. Yet, they have a soul and a clear personality, they manage to communicate no matter the country where they are shown.

My favourite screening session was Characters in Rhythm, a series of music promos and films relying on music. That’s probably the trickiest bunch of clips to judge and comment on as the fusion between the music and the animation is usually so strong that a music you loathe might prevent you from enjoying the animation.

A quick selection:

The screening kicked off with the eerie, subtle and gorgeous Sloup by Imery Watson (music Susumu Yokota, Red Swan)

Totally different is Wamono. Character Design: Solobongnu-Sensei, Woog, Maharo. Music: Hifana.

I pasted the youtube version below but this one does more justice to the beauty of the clip.

Lollipop, starring the Lollipop Girl. Production: Passion Pictures. Animation by Bonzom. Music by Mika.

Visit from the Dead Dog was by far my favourite. Designed by Tom Gauld, Chris Debney, Pete Stenhouse. Production: Dirty UK / Draw Pictures. Music by Ed Harcourt.

stay’in alive is one awesomeness. Soandsau. Production: Wizzdesign. Music: La Chose + Mirwais.

Over Time is a tribute to Jim Henson designed by students Oury Atlan, Thibaut Berland and Damien Ferrié. Students? can you believe that?
Production: Supinfocom Valenciennes. Yellow House

And of course, there was a video by Motomichi Nakamura. This time he designed the animation for Temposhark’s song ‘Blame’.

The festival is over but you can still get your hands on their DVD/books.

If the Real Thing Don’t Do the Trick, You Better Make Up Something Quick

Rob Walker points to this Hollywood Insider report about the use of Heart’s song “Barracuda” by the McCain/Palin campaign.

Heart’s Nancy Wilson felt compelled to personally respond. “I think it’s completely unfair to be so misrepresented,” she said in a phone call to EW.com. “I feel completely f—ed over.” She and sister Ann Wilson then e-mailed the following exclusive statement:

Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.)

Walker also points to this Slate piece that says if the campaign has an ASCAP license, they can play the song, or any other licensed song without express permission from the artist.
