WPP Is Sorting Out Kimberly Clark, But Only Sort Of

kc.jpg

WPP has named Carl Hartman as the lead on their Kimberly Clark account. Four shops from WPP work for the brand: JWT, Ogilvy & Mather, MindShare and Kantar Media Research. He’s also going to be sitting on the brand’s executive marketing committee.

Not like it matters. WPP doesn’t run K-C. Carl is really just keeping his team’s ducks in row, making sure everyone is talking and getting along. Naked Communications, actually runs the entire communications planning on that account. Their assigned task is to better integrate the efforts of all of its agency partners to develop media-neutral marketing ideas, communications plans and channel strategies for all of K-C’s consumer brands. So, WPP is actually answering to Naked – a whole lot of the time. Like, all of it.

If you recall, we asked the very cool Kacy Erdelyi about Naked’s win of KC in 2007. We asked why Naked was awarded the business and Erdelyi told us that:

“-because we are the only company that actually delivers integrated marketing solutions.”

Alright then.

Sex addiction can mess up your advertising

Californication

The Showtime series Californication gets this week’s prize for most inopportune tagline. Given David Duchovny’s trip to rehab for sex addiction, the line “He’s in way too deep” could refer more to his troubles than his character’s. And considering the nature of the show, some viewers have even been left to wonder if the rehab thing is a PR gambit by Showtime ahead of Californication‘s second season. (That seems unlikely, but Showtime has posted a video to its YouTube channel titled “Are you addicted to porn?” Though not in reference to Duchovny.) In general, sex addiction is tough to build marketing materials around. But that hasn’t stopped the distributors of Choke, an upcoming film about a sex addict, from trying their hardest. To the dismay of some patrons, they’ve been handing out anal beads at some preview screenings.

Facebook Blows You (Expensive) Kisses At Advertising Week

facebbook.jpg

In case you didn’t know, Advertising Week this year is going to be hosting a the Leadership Conversation, as well as a panel on social media paid for by sponsor Facebook.

You know how these conferences (or should we call them conventions) go – it’s pay to play. Still, it’s nice to see Facebook getting friendly with the industry. See? Google? This how you do it. Spend money on us. Lots of money.

Erin Zeitler of OutCast Communications for Facebook was nice enough to take time out to shed a little light why the SNS is involved this year and their two panels came to be.

1. I’m wondering why the company has decided to participate in this year’s Advertising Week?

Facebook is participating in Advertising Week in an effort to bring engaging and informative speakers to a forum that will inspire marketers to try innovative approaches to social media. The Facebook Spark Series is intended to address the impact of social media on marketing efforts and offers high caliber panelists who can address this issue.

2. And what, does your program include?

On Monday the 22nd at 2 p.m., Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg will join industry leaders in the Advertising Week Leadership Conversation. Then grab your coffee each morning at 9 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the Facebook Spark Series— a 3-part series of the impact of social media on marketing sponsored by Facebook. These panels will highlight the successes and challenges that marketers face as they implement social media into their marketing strategies to reach consumers in new and innovative ways.

Ed. Note – It’s a three part series with marketers and non-profits who have used social media to great success.

3. Did the Facebook staff choose the participants on the panel (moderator Nick Parish of Creativity; Rei Inamoto, AKQA; Richard Ting, R/GA and Rick Webb, Barbarian Group) or was that done by the Advertising Week staff?

The Advertising Leadership Conversation panel was put together by Advertising Week who invited Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg to participate as one of the panelists. Facebook, along with Advertising Week put together the Facebook Spark Series panels.

Simon Malls Dress Up to Entice Adults

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — With the economy weakening and retail closures on the rise, malls are looking for ways to attract customers and keep tenants happy. This month, Simon Property Group, which operates nearly 400 malls worldwide, is rolling out a new program called "Fashion Now" that aims to do both.

Commercials at 38,000 Feet

Flying to Australia? If so, you can catch up on “the most entertaining and innovative television commercials produced” last year, thanks to a partnership between New York Festivals and Qantas Airlines.

Qantas has been named the world’s No. 1 airline for in-flight entertainment by the World Airline Entertainment Association, for the fourth time in five years.

New York Festivals President Michael O’Rourke said, “We’re extremely excited because it means we’re giving our winners that much more exposure. At the end of the day, it’s about recognizing creative ideas and the execution of these ideas. It also gives people the opportunity to look at some of the best TV commercials in the world and in most cases, commercials they’ve never had a chance to enjoy.”

More exposure is exactly what award shows need, if they hope to be at all relevant outside the industry.

Yet Another Facebook Story: I’m Back

A number of months ago I deactivated my Facebook account. It was liberating, and I didn’t give it much thought once the deed was done.

But last Thurday at InVerge 2008 in Portland, one of the really smart speakers convinced me to get back on the horse, as it were.

Tony Uphoff, CEO of Techweb (publisher of Information Week and many other titles) mentioned that all his editors can make applications on the Facebook platform. I thought, damn, how can I just ignore this thing and get away with it? Answer: I can’t.

Last Friday, I updated my status on Facebook to this: David Burn is reactivating my Facebook account. This morning and old friend wrote on my wall: Dude where were you?

Exactly. Where was I? I could say I was working, or improving my life away from the machine. All true. But the point is well made. Facebook, like Twitter, Flickr and other online communities is “the place” where we stay connected to friends who can’t locate our email address or God forbid, our phone numbers. How dare I step off. This shit is personal.

And it’s business.
