Paramount Hopes VooZoo Is More Than a Social-Network Fad

LOS ANGELES (AdAge.com) — In March, Paramount became the first (and so far, only) major studio to make thousands of movie clips available for use on the internet. The studio launched VooZoo, a sort of catchphrase-generating application that allowed Facebook users to "quote" lines and even entire scenes from their favorite Paramount films by sharing an actual film clip. Since then, VooZoo has quickly exploded, adding 20,000 members a day, eventually becoming used by several hundred thousand Facebook users.

McDonald’s Considering Ad Placement on School Buses

fatboy.jpg

Crossroads Marketing Inc., a small Michigan based agency, has apparently been pitching the Michigan Department of Education to allow the placement.

With dwindling budgets and rising fuel costs, schools are increasingly strapped to keep their programs and buses running. An ad plan could help offset the problem, but at the cost of subjecting children to ads for…McDonald’s?

It seems unlikely that the school boards, parents, etc. will allow it, but that’s why we don’t have kids. We can’t imaging spending a night at a PTA meeting to go over this crap. Then again, that’s just us.

Apparently, McDonald’s is interested in accessing such a program, since kids have little to do on the bus but stare straight ahead. Er wait, what do kids do on buses these days? Find out after the jump.

Element 79 Loses Quaker Foods & Snacks, Chris Miller May be Departing

quaker_1.jpg

We have confirmed that Element 79 has lost their business with Quaker Foods and Snacks. PJ Finopoli, Quaker’s VP of communications informed us of the decision late last night.

In what was referred to as a “difficult decision”, Finopoli informed us that, “Quaker has gone in a new direction with its advertising…(it was decided) that the brands could benefit from new creative direction…now is the time to consider a switch.”

Our spy tells us Quaker accounted for 15 percent of the agency’s business. Quaker had been on the shop’s client list for a “long time”. Remember when we reported E79 had laid off some 30 (well, 35 in total) employees in June? As SuperSpy put it, “Once, They Were Kings“.

Furthermore, we’re told that Chris Miller, recently appointed chief digital officer, isn’t long for the E79 world. Whether by his choice or not, he may not be working there much longer. More on that to come.

Seize The Day

Noam Wasserman of Harvard Business School looks at some of the fundamental realities of owning your own shop.

Are you one of the many executives who’d love to leave the corporate battleship to skipper a speedy, nimble start-up? And are you using a variety of rationales for why it’s not yet time to go? Reasons such as: I need to work on my résumé, acquire more credibility, learn to manage better, figure out how financing really works, maintain stability at home while my children are young?

Those are legit reasons, of course, but while you’re waiting for everything to fall into place, you’re acquiring big-company habits that can hurt you if and when you ever make the move. Long tenures in corporate jobs keep you from becoming the self-reliant jack-of-all-trades that a new venture requires. You get used to having HR specialists take care of HR issues for you, finance aces prepare reports for you, and IT whizzes maintain the company infrastructure. You become accustomed to delegating and to distancing yourself from “real work” — a luxury that just isn’t possible in a start-up.

I know we have some community members here that jumped from a holding company’s air craft carrier of agencies to their own swift boat. Hopefully, we can hear from them in the comments.
