Little Big Men: Biggs Gilmore

biggsgilmore.jpg

There are a lot of agencies in the world. We noticed that we spend a lot of time talking about the death stars (like McCann Worldwide) and mega-rebel alliances such as Droga or CP+B. The galaxy is full of smaller agencies that are doing bad, good and great work that is worth taking note of.

An agency caught our eye this morning. Why? Lets start with mentioning that Biggs/Gilmore won 20 WebAwards in an annual competition sponsored by the Web Marketing Association. Twenty. Naturally, the Michigan based shop made the list of most awarded agencies. In 2007, they took home the Top Agency Award. This year, they were second. They beat out Tribal, Avenue A, all the usual suspects.

Pretty sweet. The agency, founded in 1973, has quietly been holding down interactive work for clients such as Kellogg’s, Kimberly-Clark and Johnson & Johnson. From 2006 to 2007, the shop increased revenue by 10.5%. Nice job.

BG is run by Mike Gerfen, President and Jane Tamraz, CEO. Tamraz is a true Michigan woman having gone to Michigan State University and worked as the director of marketing for a Michigan-based health-care system before joining Biggs|Gilmore.
Andy Gould is the ECD along with Marino Puhalj. Darrel Smith is the vice president of interactive-services department with Dean Suarez-Starfeldt strategic-planning function.

We’ll be keeping an eye on them from here on out.

NBC Wins Right to Whore Out ‘Runway’

jeff-zucker.jpg

NBC Universal’s recent win over the Weinstein company on the matter of Bravo’s “Project Runway” may land the show in the prime time, according to a source close to the issue. But finding a space for ‘PR’ in the already tightly packed NBC line-up may not be easy, and would be seemingly out of place.

And nothing’s permanent yet. Weinstein, which apparently got hold of the show by threatening to air personal secrets about NBC President and CEO Jeff Zucker (as well as other high-up NBC and GE folks), could have avoided the court matter by simply waiting for NBC to take a look at the deal.

Bottom-line, the show has to be re-branded for whichever network it’s headed for. And to coincide, ad dollars will likely be reshuffled, too. We’re eager to hear how NBC plans to align ‘PR’ in coming weeks, as the next season is just a breath away (in entertainment years).

Economic Predictions: The Downward Spiral Of The Ad Spend

thedownardspiral.jpg

It’s dark out there with ad spend forecasters continuing to downgrade their estimates.ZenithOptimedia and Magna have lowered their growth estimates to low single digits. From Mediaweek:

“But privately, some industry executives now believe this year’s ad spend might actually end up in negative territory, and might not improve at all in 2009. They point to figures just released by Nielsen Monitor-Plus that show a first-half U.S. ad spend decline of 1.4 percent, compared with the same period in 2007-”

The Association of National Advertisers reported over half of their members are expecting to cut their media budgets in the next six months and our looking to scale back marketing efforts.

Steve Lanzano, chief operating officer at MPG North America is pretty sure that 2009 is going to be a very difficult year calling it “daunting out there.”

Hmm… What did Marc Goldstein, president and CEO of media agency conglomerate GroupM North America, say at Advertising Week? Oh riiiight. That everything would be just fine. Ha! Don’t worry too much. There is a silver lining: “The continuous decline in the US spend on advertising is certainly not a worldwide phenomenon,” said Avi Bhojani, CEO of Bates Pan Gulf Group.

Still, is your stomach feeling shaky? Mine is.
