Visa And TBWA: Somethings Change, Somethings Don’t

visa.jpg

It may seemed as if the world we all knew ended this week. Not totally, but just a bit. Holy smokes! Lehman Brothers? Holy shit! Hewlett-Packard lays of almost 13,000 people in the United States alone? WTF! AIG?

Some things, however, have remained the same. Visa put their account up for review in an attempt to consolidate their business. TBWA/Chiat/Day held their creative duties. Well, TBWA won it all over again. Against, BBDO and Grey (both in New York) and Leo Burnett in Chicago, the incumbent not only re-won, but picked up even more of the account. OMD and Mediaedge:cia battled it out recently for the media slot with the former taking U.S., Asian duties and added Latin America. The latter retained its European business.

“Pretty Baby” on the New Baby Boom

Need a new vehicle that goes great with your stroller? VW wants to sell you one, and they’ve hired Brooke Shields to help drive you to a dealer.

Adweek’s Barbara Lippert, for one, is in favor of the approach.

I like Brooke Shields, especially when the picture-perfect Princeton grad plays against her natural earnestness, as she does in this Crispin Porter + Bogusky spot for the newly introduced Volkswagen Routan, a minivan-type vehicle perfect for hipsters in the family way.

In faux-concerned, do-gooder obliviousness, Shields claims there’s an “epidemic sweeping the nation: women everywhere are having babies just to get a VW Routan.”

Does Barack Really Want My Opinion?

I’ve written before about the sophisticated marketing techniques the Obama campaign has employed.

Today, I got an email suggesting they’re looking for more feedback.

OBAMA.jpg

I got invited to take a survey that says in part, “your feedback will inform the planning and will help us adjust for the next phase.”

I haven’t done the survey yet, but I will. Are they going to change their message in the next 50 days based on what their supporters want? Seems to me they need to go after the folks who still need to make up their minds.

Either way, they do give the impression that they care what I think. More brands need to follow their lead.

UPDATE: Okay, so I took the survey. They’re just trying to get more information about me and fish for extra volunteers. I won’t be shaping message strategy anytime soon.

McCain Probably Wishing for Another ‘Lipstick on Pig’ Outbreak

Let me first stipulate that, when you look at actual policy positions, neither Barack Obama nor John McCain has an answer to the mess going on on Wall Street at the moment. But we all know that politics has as much to do with image as it does with policy. And right now, John McCain looks like the one floundering all over the place.

Ogilvy Stays Young At Heart

If advertising is an important member of the culture industry–and I’d argue it is–Ogilvy is betting on the right sort of man to lead it into the future.

Miles_Young.jpg

According to The Wall Street Journal, Englishman, Miles Young, will take the helm of the WPP Group agency on January 1. Young, 53, served as head of Ogilvy’s Asia-Pacific business for 13 years.

The executive, who dresses and acts more like an Oxford don than an ad man, is largely an outsider in the New York-centered ad industry. And he says he will try to usher in a less U.S.-centered view of the marketplace. Mr. Young, who has traveled extensively, owns a cinnamon plantation in Sri Lanka and is a major collector of Asian art.

In July, he led a group of academics, businessmen and Chinese and Russian students on an Ogilvy-sponsored train trip to Russia’s Lake Baikal for an academic study of globalization and the environment. Mr. Young assigned participants a five-book reading list.

Given that David Ogilvy founded this legendary firm that bears his name, Young’s style seems an ideal fit.
