Are Gates and Seinfeld Really Real?

We know the ads are pretty funny, but are Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld for real?

That’s what the goal is behind the series of Microsoft ads featuring the odd couple. The second one was released this week. Seinfeld says the goal of the ads is to show them as normal people so they can connect with others.

In the ads, Seinfeld and Gates integrate themselves into a regular family by playing ping pong, getting Chinese food delivered to the house and getting punished for allegedly stealing a leather giraffe from Cabo San Lucas. Gates reads one of the other boys in the family a story before bed and puts the child’s fears of monsters at ease by replying, “It’s okay. There’s a firewall.”

Seinfeld contributes by saying how Gates has “connected over a billion people” and then focuses on Microsoft.

The goal of the campaign is to change Microsoft’s image. The company told its employees in an email after the first ad aired that the ads are ”designed to engage consumers and spark a new conversation.”

Microsoft is spending $300 million on the campaign. Seinfeld will earn an easy $10 million from appearing in the ads.

Medical Device Ads Under Scrutiny

Even worse than ads for prescription drugs are advertisements for medical devices, experts told lawmakers today. They told a Senate Aging Committe that ads for artificial knees, heart devices and implants require restrictions.

Even though advertising for medical devices doesn’t come close to magazine and TV ads, which count for $5 billion in spending last year alone, several of the large device companies are advertising just like the big pharmaceutical big wigs.  Medical device advertising via TV and Internet accounted for about $193 million last year.

Johnson & Johnson currently promotes its orthopedic hips with a TV ad that features Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, which Biomet promotes its products with spokeswoman Mary Lou Retton, a well-known Olympic gymnastics champion.

Kevin Bozic, a board director of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, says that unlike pharmaceutical drug ads, these ads aren’t required to disclose risks of their products, which can lead to overutilization of “inappropriate and costly, unproven technologies.”

Spelling Change Through Mother

tshirtsformother.jpg

Mother New York has decided to through its hat in the race for Prez. And as recent trends have indicated, they naturally, threw left. They are asking people in the ad biz to use their talents to spell change.

“-Mother New York are launching the “Spelling Change” campaign to represent the true breadth and depth of Obama’s support,
and we need your help. The challenge is simple: show us how you spell change. We’re asking all our artist and designer friends to reinterpret one letter of the alphabet in a way that represents what Obama’s candidacy means to them. These letters will then be printed on t-shirts that Obama supporters from all walks of life will be photographed in, creating a living alphabet.”

Does AIG Still Have “Strength to be There”?

Apparently, AIG has been saved the trouble of facing potential bankruptcy thanks to the assistance provided by the US Federal reserve which reached a whopping $85 Million dollars. While AIG may be in the red, perhaps their previous commercials need to be reviewed. For sure, their tagline “Strength to be There” needs to be reviewed as their current public issues have become well-known all throughout the world.

The Cavalcade of Cartoon Starts

The series of short cartoon clips featuring Seth McFarlane, the same person who lent his voice in Family Guy has commenced. Much of them are short, somewhere around 50 seconds which are aimed at being able to be shown via Google.

It looks like this new series of short cartoon clips can really make a hit on the Google advertising scene and before you know it, perhaps you may see a lot of companies trying to insert their company logos.

Much of them can be seen via YouTube (the Burger King channel, of course) and the site above. The big deal is that the toons could display in online ads provided by Google Adsense. Considering how well Family Guy’s digressional clips do online, it’s hard to bet against success, but can they work without Stewie and Brian holding things together? Only time, and several millions clicks, will tell.

socialmediastuff.jpg
“Representatives from more than twenty-five agencies, brand advertisers, and social media companies are joining to form the Social Media Advertising Council.”

I didn’t make this up. They issued a press release and everything.
They want to set standards for buying and measuring social media activities. As well, as creating “a common vocabulary, standard buying units and uniform measurement methods for marketing within social media.”

Participating agencies come from across PR and advertising: Edelman, Havas Digital, Enfactico, Mediavest, UniversalMcCann, W2, Digitas, Deep Focus and some other companies.

Can’t wait to see how this works out. If you are interested in SMAC membership can contact: Christine Baptiste at cbaptiste at gatherinc dot com .
