In a message sent to members at mid-day Sunday, WGA West president Patric Verrone and WGA East prexy Michael Winship said, “The facts: we are still in talks and do not yet have a contract. When and if a tentative agreement is reached, the first thing we will do is alert our membership with an e-mail message. Until then, please disregard rumors about either the existence of an agreement or its terms.”

Whose Super Bowl Ads Scored Online?

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Pepsi, CareerBuilder, GoDaddy, Tide, T-Mobile and Cars.com all scored big in the fourth-annual Super Bowl search report card, compiled by search-engine-marketing firm Reprise Media. The biggest losers: Disney, Zantac and Hershey — along with the entertainment industry — which had negligible connections between their game-day ads and online presences.

Naked and angry: 86-year-old’s protest ad

Homecare
Last year, an Italian campaign against anorexia showed just how jarring nudity can be. (The ads even made it to the Elite 8 of our Freakiest Ad Moments of 2007 contest.) But now the honor for Most Awkward and Yet Profound Nudity goes to the Dutch Socialist Party for its 60-second spot criticizing changes to the nation’s homecare policy. The ad features an 86-year-old woman completely disrobing while she explains the policy change. A quick summary of the message: Previously, if you were elderly in the Netherlands, you could have one personal helper whom you got to know and trust. To cut costs, the government opted to rotate in different helpers instead of always giving you the same one. “A stranger is helping me with washing myself now,” the woman says in the protest ad, “and the next time it’ll be another stranger.” Why not, she wonders, just undress in public? Big thanks to Marc at Osocio for highlighting this spot and posting a translation.

NFL Super Bowl promo ticks off Arcade Fire

Arcadefire
The question of whether Tom Petty was lip-syncing during his halftime performance at the Super Bowl isn’t the only musical scandal brewing following Sunday night’s game. Arcade Fire is now reportedly weighing its legal options after the NFL used its song “No Cars Go” in a promo—allegedly without permission. Pitchfork reports: “We knew these guys were sports fans, but would Win, Regine, and the gang really sell their music to Rupert Murdoch so that he could advertise his football television program? No, no they wouldn’t. Turns out Fox never even asked the band if they could use their song, and they certainly weren’t given permission to do so.” Perhaps the indie band can open for some other baby boomer next year as payback.
