Palestine Emerging

At the bitter edge of hope’s flight…

Palestine flickers into existence again.

2000–2011: Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Guyana gave the green light to Palestinian sovereignty. Norway called the “general delegation” from Palestine a “diplomatic delegation.” Norway’s foreign minister — the first such voice in the EU — announced that “Palestinians have a right to go to the UN.”

In 2012, the UN General Assembly upgraded the Palestinian status to “a non–member observer state.”

While the Israeli government has been warding off the inevitable with pleas of “wait until we reach a peace settlement,” global onlookers have felt the trickles of a skeptical impatience set in.Two sieges and a democratic election later, a pattern of disproportionate civilian loss has emerged, shadowing all advances in Palestinian state–dom.

Fast–forward to 2014: Hamas and Fatah form a coalition to represent a unified Palestinian front at potential “peace talks.” Israel’s efforts at “peace” result in over a thousand Gazan deaths, widespread anti–protest crackdowns on Israelis for peace and the annexation of a further 950 acres of the West Bank.

The world says enough.

THEN THE UK PARLIAMENT VOTES IN FAVOR OF A PALESTINIAN STATE

Sweden becomes the first major European state to recognize Palestine. The UK Commons vote on a symbolic pledge to recognize Palestine.

And now… this. 660 Israeli public figures call on Denmark to recognize Palestine.

At the bitter edge of hope’s flight, Palestine flickers into existence again.
