R/GA Enters the One Club Creative Hall of Fame

The One Club, an ad industry institution best known for honoring old white people since 1961, inducted five more agency veterans into its Creative Hall of Fame last Friday — and we have the pictures.

Readers will be most interested to know that inductees included R/GA founder/chairman/CEO Bob Greenberg. Here he is at Friday’s ceremony accepting the award from CCO Nick Law (all pics via Ric Callaher courtesy of The One Club):

The org’s writeup praises Greenberg as “a pioneer in the advertising and communications industry for nearly four decades,” noting R/GA’s digital-first work for such clients as Nike and Beats.

The One Club also further illustrated the industry’s generational divide by naming Levine Huntley Schmidt & Beaver partner and “second creative revolution” vet Allan Beaver to the Hall. Here he is after accepting his award:

The night’s other honorees included Washington Olivetto, Chairman of WMcCann Brazil and CCO for the Latin American and Caribbean regions, and Lella Vignelli and her husband Massimo, who passed last May. The pair are best known for designing the New York subway system’s signage as well as logos for brands like Bloomingdale’s and American Airlines.

Vignelli was unable to attend the event, but here’s Olivetto:

Attendees included other top creatives such as (from left): Ted Royer, CCO of Droga5 and One Club Board Member; Pum Lefebure, co-founder and CCO of Design Army; and Andy Azula, Creative Director of The Martin Agency.

No word on whether Greenberg’s appointment marks a change in the unending digital vs. traditional debate — but for an additional bit of “how far we’ve come” nostalgia, here’s Nick Law telling former Spy Matt Van Hoven why discipline is the biggest challenge for agencies making the switch…circa 2009.

Executive Shifts at R/GA Sao Paulo and San Francisco

RGA_ColorOnWhite

Last month we broke the news of an executive reshuffling at R/GA San Francisco. That move saw the departure of an MD and an ECD, and today we learned that the agency has tapped two Brazilian vets to replace them.

Paola Colombo, VP/MD, and Paulo Melchiori, VP/ECD, founded the shop’s Sao Paulo office in 2010, and they will hold the same positions in San Francisco moving forward. Fabiano Coura, another Sao Paulo co-founder, will step into Colombo’s role, with Technology Director Edson Sueyoshi moving up to VP.

Departed SF ECD Rob Smiley has gone the freelance route, and there’s no word on any new creative hires in Sao Paulo.

The change will be complete by March 2015, and all four executives will report directly to agency founder/CEO Bob Greenbergwho writes:

“I’m very excited to have Paola and Paulo return to the San Francisco market after successfully launching our award-winning São Paulo office, which after five years continues to grow exponentially.”

In other San Francisco agency news, Mullen/GS&P/DDB alum Stephen Goldblatt is now officially ECD at West, according to his LinkedIn page — so stop sending us tips about it!

R/GA Now Accepting Applications for Second ‘Accelerator’ Program

The “agency for the digital” has announced that it’s accepting applications for the second round of its “Accelerator” program, an initiative that’s run out of its R/GA Ventures unit, which is focused not only on integration of design, technology and innovation but enabling startups and doling out investment funds. For its second Accelerator program, R/GA, with the aid of TechStars, is turning the spotlight on to n the Internet of Things (IoT) and Connected Devices space and is looking for applicants ranging from early prototype developers to startups with traction.

In a statement, R/GA boss Bob Greenberg says, ““The power of internet software continues to disrupt industries as it spreads beyond the web and mobile and into devices, machines, and physical environments. For companies to succeed, whether in the consumer or B2B space, they have to create truly innovative technology solutions. However, great technology is not enough. Companies must also create elegant and cohesive user experiences across digital and physical touchpoints, in addition to compelling brands that consumers will care about.”

Those applicants that make the grade will have access to a range of R/GA services, including strategic design, branding, and technology, startups as well as network of senior clients from the likes of Nike, Samsung and Beats by Dr. Dre. In addition, startups that enter the Accelerator program will be eligible to receive up to $120,000 in funding for their brainchild. The application process for Accelerator, which this time enlists the services of industrial design outfit ASTRO Studios, begins today and runs through Aug. 25. Those that make the cut will be notified by Sept. 22 and the program itself kicks off on Oct. 20. You can keep up to date on the project here. Best of luck, folks.

Australian Creatives Poke Fun at Your Least Favorite Agency Trends

Want to watch a few top creatives at Australian agencies have some straight-faced fun at the expense of current industry trends? Sure you do.

Yes, the video is a little long–but it does manage to allow CCOs and ECDs from Ogilvy, BBDO, JWT, etc. to get some camera time and drop a few inside jokes.

Of course, it’s all about promoting a Creative Fuel conference in Sydney next month, at which speakers like RGA founder Bob Greenberg will apparently encourage agency professionals to “cut the bullshit and refocus on creativity.”

Still, “The World’s First Crowd Sourced 3D-Printed QR Code Live Streamed Via Go Pro To A Smart Phone Or Tablet Device Drone Delivery Ticket System Project” almost sounds believable, doesn’t it?

If you’re really pressed for time, skip ahead to 4:00 for a bit of light slapstick.

And Now, a Quick Look into 2013 D&AD Black Pencil Judging

While the 2013 D&AD Awards is now in the books, the folks behind the event, like last year, have released a post-game video documenting the seemingly painstaking process of deciding who takes home D&AD’s most prestigious prize, the Black Pencil. Thankfully, there’s less debate and dillydallying this time around as the parties who produced this clip have shaved off half the time from last year’s Black Pencil instalment, which featured judges like David Droga and Bob Greenberg. This year’s version, meanwhile, features Black Pencil judges including W+K alum/Google Creative Labs ECD Iain Tait, Fred & Farid co-founder Fred Raillard and Turner Duckworth’s David Turner. In total, there were four 2013 Black Pencil winners (we’re almost certain you can guess one of them) as you’ll see at the end of the video, which lets you be a fly on the wall if only for a few. FYI, D&AD 2014 call for entries is now open.

Adams Jr. Succeeds Hughes as Head of VCU Brandcenter Board

And now, a bit of news news. The baton has officially been passed from one Martin Agency exec to another as the Richmond, VA operation’s chairman John B. Adams Jr. is taking over for longtime friend and colleague, Martin president Mike Hughes, as head of the VCU Brandcenter’s Board of Directors, which includes other notable names such as David Droga and Bob Greenberg Hughes, who you’re probably aware is battling cancer at the moment, will step down from his VCU leadership position, one he’s held for two decades, and into the role of chairman emeritus with the Brandcenter’s Advisory Board.

In a statement, the outgoing VCU board head says, ““I’m especially proud of my part in helping to bring [Brandcenter director] Helayne [Spivak] and John to these positions. I can’t imagine two better people to lead the changes and advances ahead. The students, faculty and the industry should all feel very good about this. My 34-year partnership with John and my 20-year relationship with the Brandcenter have been two of the highlights of my career. I envy their opportunity to help define the future of this business and the future of advertising and branding education.”
