Apple Buys CBS's 'Carpool Karaoke' Spin-Off Show


“Carpool Karaoke,” a segment from CBS’s “The Late Late Show With James Corden” that regularly goes viral on the web, is becoming a series of its own, to appear exclusively on Apple Music.

Apple Music will stream 16 weekly episodes to its subscribers in more than 100 countries, Apple and CBS said in a statement. Mr. Corden won’t host the series, but will serve as creator and executive producer along with “Late Late Show” producer Ben Winston.

Apple is also developing an unscripted competition series called “Planet of the Apps.” Although it isn’t clear exactly how that show will be distributed, it is expected to appear on Apple platforms, and together with the “Carpool Karaoke” spin-off suggests that the company is moving toward original entertainment that could compete with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
