in today’s Turkey where media conglomerates under authoritarian scrutiny, Acik Radyo (meaning Open Radio) is a completely independent radio station operating purely with the help of volunteers and fans. They do two things: They share REAL news, uncensored and unfiltered. And they air music from all around the world. Anything but mainstream. We have started a project to increase the number of followers. It’s called “Song of the Day” We take the news in Acik Radyo’s morning program. Then turn them into song lyrics. Then we compose them into a song. And air them on the radio on the same day. We have aired around 15 songs so far. Everyday, we work with different musicians, who volunteer for the project. For two reasons. They are fans of the radio. And for the thrill of composing a song in a single day. Bands, street musicians, singers etc have been involved. Turkey’s most famous jazz choir has worked with us. And Turkish celebrities have been involved too.
