Publishers, you're focusing on the wrong metric for push notifications

With push notifications, there’s never been a more direct way for publishers to build brand evangelism and reach their audience. But if the digital publishing community focuses on incomplete metrics, then there’s a real risk of breaking the whole system, echoing recent statements from the IAB regarding “clickhead” advertising, acknowledging that we need to rethink how we measure online value.

Without an appropriate framework to measure long-term push notification strategies, publishers walk a tightrope between engaging their audience and spamming them. Although high amounts of click-throughs or “tap-throughs” may result in short-term spikes in traffic and ad revenue, they will eventually be detrimental to the overall value of a strategy.

This requires a new metric to measure the net gain in readership created by push notifications.

In fact, video ads haven’t actually changed in decades, aside from getting shorter and running on different types of screens. Whereas…

Dunkin' sneakers drop ahead of Boston Marathon

America runs on Dunkin’ has a new meaning.

The coffee chain, headquartered outside of Boston, has reunited with shoe brand Saucony to create a Dunkin’-inspired sneaker ahead of the Boston Marathon on April 15.

Not every TV network will talk up targeting and attribution in the upfronts

While the majority of TV networks will spend the next few months pitching advertisers on their targeting capabilities, new measurement tools and ability to prove commercials drive business results, there’s something to be said about networks that continue promoting what TV was once known forreach and safety.

In this way, Hallmark Channel won’t spend its conversations with agencies and their clients talking up data sets or striking guarantees that are based on new metrics. Instead, it will focus on the continued strength of its linear ratings and the stability of the company at a time when several traditional media behemoths are in a state of flux.

“We don’t want to turn a blind eye to the trends of the industry,” says Ed Georger, exec VP, advertising sales and digital media, at Crown Media, parent of Hallmark Channel. “Yes, there is a growth of marketers looking for ways to measure more granularly and optimize schedules. That being said, we still see TV as a reach vehicle and still think there is opportunity to reach viewers in an environment that’s safe and compelling.”
