How retail brands can survive the attack of the algorithm


The combination of algorithms and retail is irresistible. By matching supply and demand as closely as possible, they learn about our preferences and shopping behaviors, predict what we’d like, develop tailored recommendationsand increase the likelihood of a transaction. That’s why there’s an entire new industry emerging around shopping aggregators and wardrobe-curation services.

By turning products, services and content into commodities, algorithms, by default, are the opposite of brands. Some investors have even concluded that algorithms will replace the role of brands in conveying trust and guiding us through our choices. That’s why the modern test of brand strength is its resistance to the algorithm.

The true challenge for retail, then, is not how to accelerate algorithm-induced product commoditization, but how to circumvent it.

Casting agency accused of inappropriate behavior on AB InBev Super Bowl ad shoot


Anheuser-Busch InBev and an ad production company on Thursday responded to allegations that a casting agency engaged in inappropriate behavior while selecting talent for a Super Bowl ad for the marketer’s Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer.

In a first-person essay published in Vice in December, actress Ingrid Haas alleged that she had a “bikini audition from hell” when auditioning for a mermaid-themed commercial for an alcoholic brand that she does not identify. In the essay, Haas claims women were required to wear bikinis and instructed to dance at the audition.

An InBev spokeswoman confirmed the commercial the writer references was for Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer.

Gap recruits new CMO from Adidas


The CMO door is swinging at Gap again.

The San Francisco-based retailer has tapped Alegra O’Hare as senior VP and CMO. A 12-year veteran of Adidas, O’Hare will join the apparel brand on Feb. 25. She was most recently VP of global brand communications at Adidas Originals and Style.

“I have always admired Gap’s ethos, including the culture, creativity and heritage of the brand,” O’Hare said in a statement. She noted that she’s tasked with shifting brand perception and amplifying Gap’s stories.

Turner sells out NBA All-Star Game in record time


Now that all the hype around the Super Bowl has been laid to rest for another year, sponsorship and advertising dollars keyed to televised sports are making a fast break toward basketball. And as it’s the biggest sporting event on the schedule before the NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off in March, all eyes are now locked onto the NBA All-Star Game.

With general-entertainment ratings circling the drain, the NBA’s revamped annual scrimmage has an open lane to the hoop. Given the All-Star Game’s rock steady deliveriesthe viewership totals, demos and household ratings for each of the last five telecasts are virtually identicaland the superior commercial impressions afforded by live sports programming, advertisers have been quick to snap up inventory in and around the Feb. 17 showcase.

According to Jon Diament, executive vice president for Turner Sports Ad Sales, his team sold out its available units in record time, closing out the last bit of All-Star business about three weeks ago. And when Diament says he’s out of sale, that applies to the entire weekend of activity scheduled around the game.
