Long Seen as Tech’s Sleeping Giant, Microsoft’s Stealth Approach Is Starting to Pay Off

As children, we’re told patience is a virtue, that slow and steady wins the race. But in Silicon Valley, where the “build fast, break fast” ethos guides companies, being a turtle is a sin. With this backdrop, Microsoft, that lumbering giant nestled among the forests of the Pacific Northwest, took the financial and tech worlds…

In November, Microsoft began unveiling the first phases of a major rebrand, starting with an overhaul of its entire suite of Office icons, followed soon after by a redesign of its Outlook email app. “It’s the beginning of a larger set of guidelines,” says Becky Brown, creative director at Microsoft. Designers and engineers from various…

National Geographic Dares to Think Outside the (Yellow) Box With Valley of the Boom

Matthew Carnahan cannot be accused of false advertising. The creator of Valley of the Boom, premiering Jan. 13 on Nat Geo, pitched the genre-bending scripted-and-documentary hybrid as a project that would elasticize and perhaps even traumatize the storied cable network. “I told them I was going to blow up their perfect gold box,” Carnahan says,…

Hard on the heels of the holiday season, it’s the unofficial start of the year and stepping off the plane at McCarran…

The Color Factory in New York is made for Instagram, like Willy Wonka’s factory was made for chocolate. But every exhibit at the Color Factory is designed for selfies instead of candy.

There’s one room with a pond-sized ball pit, and another with a rainbow staircase. It’s a true playground for the senses. And on one night in November, it also turned into a classroom for what Facebook calls “story school.”

Huge NFL lead-in no boon for Golden Globe ratings

Despite following the weekend’s highest-rated NFL Wild Card game, NBC’s presentation of the 76th Golden Globe Awards wasn’t able to take full advantage of its massive football lead-in.

Hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, the three-hour broadcast averaged 18.6 million live-same-day viewers and a 5.2 rating in NBC’s target demo, which translates to 6.68 million adults 18-49. Retention of the audience that had tuned in for the end of the earlier Eagles-Bears nail-biter was relatively low; per Nielsen’ fast national data, the last half-hour of that NFC showdown averaged 38.5 million viewers.

Roughly 42 percent of those watching the NFL playoff game drif away from NBC as the Globes broadcast kicked off. In all likelihood, many of those who elected to sit out the start of Hollywood’s award season were residents of the nation’s third- and fourth-largest media markets; a missed Bears field goal in the closing seconds left viewers in Chicago’s 3.25 million TV households in despair, while Philadelphia’s 2.82 million TV owners may have been too busy celebrating the Eagles’ big win to bother with the Globes.

Goodby's new BMW campaign consists entirely of old ads

Typically the last thing an agency wants to do is reference another shop’s work, let alone recycle major portions of it. But Goodby, Silverstein & Partners has launched a new campaign for BMW that consists entirely of ads from the brand’s previous agency, KBS.

But there’s a catch: The campaign is for certified pre-owned BMW vehicles, so Goodby is recycling the ads that were originally used for the vehicles when they were new. While the video in the ads is the same, the new versions include voice-over from actor Chris Pine who injects some running commentary into each spot, including riffing on the original dialogue.

In one ad (above), Pine notes that “we saved so much money recycling this ad we can run it as much as we likejust like the money you’ll save on a certified BMW.”
