Huawei demotes workers for tweeting from iPhone

Huawei Technologies Co. can get really touchy about its phones. This week, the fast-rising Chinese company demoted and cut the pay of two employees held responsible for a New Year’s greeting tweeted from Huawei’s official account — with an iPhone.

It was an embarrassing snafu for China’s biggest telecoms gear maker, which supplanted Apple Inc. as the world’s No. 2 smartphone brand in 2018 and is now gunning for the top spot. The slip-up comes as tensions run high with finance chief Meng Wanzhou facing extradition to the U.S. over alleged bank fraud.

And it may have further ruffled feathers in Shenzhen after a number of popular American blogs, including 9to5mac, picked up on and ran with the since-deleted tweet, marked “via Twitter for iPhone.”

CES will be awash with voice-activated gadgets

As he browsed digital store shelves last month in search of an aromatherapy diffuser, entrepreneur David Berger had a single requirement for his wife’s Christmas gift: It had to work with Amazon.com Inc.’s Alexa software.

“She’s really into making the house smell beautiful, and I’m really into Alexa,” says Berger who lives in Weston, Connecticut. “So this is a great gift for both of us.”

Voice-activated digital assistants are racing from novelty to mainstream computing device. More than a quarter of U.S. adults will use one regularly next year, according to EMarketer Inc., and they’re increasingly ordering them to dim the lights, control the television and thermostat and, yes, turn on diffusers to waft scents around the house.

BP: Bright Ideas

BP Outdoor Ad - Bright Ideas
BP Outdoor Ad - Bright Ideas

To attract people to join BP, we took over a series of UK-based backlit adshel sites in locations where our target market work, live and commute from.

Then we turned the power off.

We didn’t need it.

Instead, our ads were printed using glow-in-the-dark phosphorescent inks. Through the day the phosphors in the ink energize themselves by absorbing natural light. Then, at night, they slowly release that stored energy – emiting a glow and eliminating any need for other energy forms. It’s an approach that turned a recruitment message into a demonstration of BP’s innovative thinking. Creating something visually striking and attracting people who are prepared to explore unlikely options to come up with brilliant ideas.

The objective of this effort is not only to bring awareness to the issue but also to help promote the work of organizations that spend night and day working on saving our seas.

Tattoo. Art on the skin

A rite of passage, a sign of transgression, a symbol of youth and rebellion or simply an expressive language for contemporary artists.

TATTOO. L’arte sulla pelle / TATTOO. Art on the Skin, a show that opened a few weeks ago at the MAO, the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin, explores the cultural, social and artistic dimensions of tattoos.

The exhibition is a joy to visit. Not only does it present artifacts and information related to tattoos in Japan, Pacific Ocean and in the South East of Asia throughout history but it also makes them enter into a dialogue with bikers, Russian and Italian criminals, skinheads, Hollywood movies and Delvoye’s tattooed pigs.

I’ve blogged about tattoo in culture numerous times already so i’ll just take the lazy road and leave you with lots of links and images and very few texts:

Olive Ann Oatman, September 7, 1837

Olive Oatman was probably the first occidental woman who was exhibited in public for her tattoos. Her parents were killed in 1851, when she was fourteen, by a Native American tribe who later sold her and her sister to the Mohave people. The Mohave people tattooed both of the girls to welcome them and help them integrate better in their society. After several years with the Mohave, she returned to white society.

Ross Sinclair, The Real Life Portraits, Duff House #5, 2000

Ross Sinclair initiated his Real Life project in 1994 when he had the words ‘Real Life’ tattooed across his back. Since then it has grown into a 20-plus year performance project, taking form in a wide range of exhibitions, mediums and publication contexts.

Mary Coble, Untitled (Blood Script Portfolio), 2008

Mary Coble had 80 insulting words tattooed without ink in front of a live audience over the course of two days. Blood impressions on paper were made of each word to generate a set of unique paintings.

Sorry for the poor quality of the photo below. I took it with my phone while visiting the show. I couldn’t find a better quality of image online but still wanted to mention the work of Nico Mingozzi. I love what he does.

Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso believed that criminals could be distinguished from noncriminals by physical anomalies. The “born criminal” could be anatomically identified by such features as a sloping forehead, asymmetry of the face, prognathism, bloodshot eyes, excessive length of arms and other “physical stigmata.” Moreover, for Lombroso, criminal appearance was not just inherited, it could also be judged through superficial features like body tattoos. Several objects and drawings from the archives of the Museum of Criminal Anthropology “Cesare Lombroso” in Turin illustrated the kind of links his theory made between tattoos and criminality.

Plinio Martelli added colours to images he found in judicial archives. The photos show people who had mythical creatures, scenes of violence, or esoteric, erotic or religious symbols tattooed on their skin.

CBS impasse with Nielsen isn't expected to last long

CBS needs to make a deal with Nielsen soon, as media buyers say the standoff with the measurement giant, which began on Dec. 31, is making it challenging for the eye network to get business done.

CBS made its first public comment about its contract dispute with Nielsen on Wednesday: “The entire media industry is aware of the need for complete and accurate measurement across platforms. While Nielsen has made some strides in this area, progress has not been what we and many clients would like, and local TV measurement is particularly challenged. Despite this backdrop, Nielsen continues to use their market power to bundle disparate services and raise prices for services that don’t sufficiently address ongoing changes in the industry. As a result, we are currently at a contractual impasse, although we continue to be open to negotiating a fair deal that makes strategic and financial sense for CBS. If we cannot come to an agreement with Nielsen, we will continue to employ the many viable alternatives available to us, including Comscore.”

As a result of the contract dispute, CBS does not have access to Nielsen data, which is used to negotiate much of its advertising inventory.

Southwest founder Herb Kelleher, a fierce advocate for advertising, dies

Herb Kelleher, the lawyer with a Texas swagger who built Southwest Airlines Co. into the biggest discount carrier and set the standard for budget air travel for more than three decades, died Thursday. He was 87.

Kelleher’s persona as a chain-smoking devotee of Wild Turkey whiskey fit Southwest’s creation story: He and Texas businessman Rollin King used a cocktail napkin in 1966 to sketch a plan for flights in a triangle of Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Their formula of short, frequent, no-frills trips spawned dozens of imitators, made Southwest the largest U.S. carrier by domestic traffic, and led to an annual profit streak dating to 1973.

“His stamp on the airline industry cannot be overstated,” Southwest Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly said in a statement confirming the death. “His vision for making air travel affordable for all revolutionized the industry, and you can still see that transformation taking place today.”
