Cambridge Analytica attempts a self-defense via Twitter tweetstorm, but it backfires


Cambridge Analytica, the London-based data-analytics firm at the center of a Facebook-related firestorm thanks to journalistic exposs by The New York Times and the U.K.’s Observer (see “How Trump Consultants Exploited the Facebook Data of Millions,” which was released online by the Times on Saturday and appeared on Sunday’s print front page, and “The Cambridge Analytica Files” in The Observer, which followed the same online/print-release cycle), took to Twitter over the weekend to attempt to defend itself.

It didn’t go so well.

McCann Detroit Welcomes New President From Doner

James Ward is rejoining McCann after 15 years to serve as president of its Detroit office.

“James has an insatiable energy and drive which is infectious and, aligned with his breadth of experience in strategy, business development and leadership, makes him the perfect addition to our McCann Detroit Team. He will be a great partner for our clients in one of our most important agencies in North America,” McCann Worldgroup North America president Chris Macdonald said in a statement.

Ward spent the past 15 years with Doner Detroit, where he most recently served as executive vice president, chief strategy and integration officer. He began his career as an account director with McCann Detroit in 1991 and worked his way up to senior vice president, group account director before leaving for Doner in 2003.

“I’m so happy to be rejoining the McCann family,” Ward said in a statement. “They are truly the standard bearer for what an agency network should be in this era of modern brand building. And with the cultural and commercial renaissance going on in Detroit right now, there’s this incredible sense of possibility. No better context for an agency to do great things for their clients’ brands.”

Ward’s arrival follows the departure of executive vice president, general manager Mel Smart last month and ALDI selecting Leo Burnett as its U.S. agency of record, following a review, in January.

Imax hires TBWAChiatDay Los Angeles as global creative agency


Imax has hired TBWAChiatDay Los Angeles as its global creative agency to help the entertainment company tell its brand story.

The Omnicom agency won the business following an internally led competitive review, which followed on the heels of Imax changing up its marketing leadership team last summer. Denny Tu joined the company as executive VP of global brand and creative, one month after JL Pomeroy came onboard as the new CMO.

TBWA’s global reach, and its understanding of the Imax brand and its commercial challenges, among other things, helped the agency beat out competitors in the review, Tu says. Imax had worked with Mistress on global creative since the end of 2015 and the relationship ended in the middle of 2016.
