TDA_Boulder Pulled Trump-Mocking Ads for Hapa Sushi, Following City’s Complaint

Earlier this month, TDA_Boulder launched a campaign for Colorado sushi chain Hapa Sushi playing on Trump-fueled fears of a nuclear apocalypse, entitled “Eat Well Before It All Ends.”

The ads featured actual (frightening) tweets from Trump, followed by the “Eat Well Before It All Ends” tagline.” It appears they did not sit well with everyone.

The Denver Post reported that the Downtown Denver Partnership raised concerns regarding the “political nature” of the ads, which appeared in seven kiosks along the 16th Street Mall and offered the opportunity to change the content.

“When the city respectfully asked us to edit the copy on the ads, we decided to pull them instead,” TDA_Boulder partner, executive creative director Jonathan Schoenberg explained in a statement. “The Hapa ads are engaging because they are unedited tweets from the President, and if we edited our tagline, the work wouldn’t make sense, or have the same effect.”

TDA_Boulder has made a habit of launching attention-grabbing and potentially controversial campaigns for the sushi chain. In 2014, the agency developed a pairing menu for cannabis strains and types of sushi, following Colorado’s legalization of recreational cannabis.

Easy Does It: Easy Spirit Modernizes Beyond Big Hair and Shoulder Pads

Easy Spirit, the shoe brand known for its ’80s-era messaging like “Looks like a pump, feels like a sneaker,” is back with new marketing for the modern era. There’s no more big hair and shoulder pads, but there is still a shoe for all occasions. The new push, with which it hopes to expand its customer baseit leans toward the over-50 crowdis the brand’s first TV run since the early 1990s. It’s part of its relaunch under new owner Marc Fisher Footwear, which bought the 35-year-old Easy Spirit last year.

The work, the result of a year of customer research, according to Marc Fisher, positions Easy Spirit under a “Makers of Easy” brand platform that highlights both heritage styles of yesterday and younger consumers looking for comfortable footwear, including women who stand all day at their jobs (think nurses and teachers). Working with New York-based agency Graj + Gustafson, Easy Spirit created the ad campaign “Move For,” which began running this week on digital channels and will air on national TV in March.

“We have one of the most loyal customers you could find for a brand,” says Shanya Perera, VP of marketing and PR at Marc Fisher Footwear, noting that some women have bought over 50 pairs each.

P&G Will Cut Another $400 Million in Agency, Production Costs

If you thought Procter & Gamble Co. had cut all it could from agency and production fees, think again. The cuts are accelerating.

That’s an acceleration from the combined $750 million in such savings over the past two fiscal years. Taylor was presenting at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference in Boca Raton, Florida.

The process has involved cutting the number of agencies that P&G works with by 60 percent since fiscal 2015, but Taylor said the company will cut further, reducing them by 80 percent from the original base.

McCann Detroit Parts With EVP, General Manager Mel Smart Following ALDI Loss

McCann Detroit has parted ways with executive vice president and general manager Mel Smart.

This news comes in the wake of supermarket chain ALDI selecting Leo Burnett as its U.S. agency of record following a review.

“We can confirm that Mel has left the agency,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement. “We wish her much personal success and thank her for her contribution to the agency.”

Smart has served in her current role since May of 2013, following ten months as executive vice president, integrated client services director for the agency.

Before joining McCann, she spent four and a half years as a business strategy director for Merkley + Partners, focusing on food industry clients such as Arby’s, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Mitchell’s Fish Market, O’Charley’s, Ferrero Rocher, Tic Tac and Nutella. Prior to that she spent nearly two and a half years client-side as director of co-op marketing for McDonald’s.

ALDI never responded to email queries regarding the review, but multiple sources confirmed Leo Burnett as the winner. Kantar Media has the company spending $40 million on paid media in the first six months of 2017.

Um, KFC? You're Creeping Us Out as You Reassure Us About Your Chicken Shortage

Two small problems with that: First, KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders has been dead since 1980, and he’s recently been (kinda) replaced by a series of costumed actors who in all likelihood have zero experience with food-service logistics. Second, talking about a live chicken crossing the road to get away from a KFC conjures an unwelcome mental picture of terrified poultry trying to escape its certain dismemberment and death.

Yesterday, @KFC_UKI doubled down on its (still-living, still-ambulatory) chicken-crossing-the-road joke:

And then just a little while ago, as if to emphasize the exact nature of the fried corpses it presents to customers in bucket-shaped coffins, @KFC_UKI tweeted this:

Scotland’s iconic and notoriously cheeky Irn-Bru soda brand is back with a new ad campaign, and the response is probably exactly what the marketer was hoping for. Taco Bell Unseats Burger King as No. 4 U.S. Restaurant Chain

Lovers of chalupas and crunch wraps have spoken: Taco Bell is now bigger than Burger King.

The Mexican-themed chain eclipsed its burger rival in U.S. sales last year, becoming the fourth-largest domestic restaurant brand, according to a preliminary report by research firm Technomic. McDonald’s Corp., Starbucks Corp. and Subway Restaurants held on to the top three spots.

Taco Bell’s U.S. systemwide sales jumped 5 percent to about $9.8 billion in 2017. The company, owned by Yum Brands Inc., has made inroads with indulgent fare, along with $1 items that appeal to budget-strapped millennials. Last year marked the first time that Taco Bell has overtaken Burger King, the data showed.
