Here's How CNN Is Covering the Man Who Threatened to Massacre CNN Staff Over 'Fake News'

Less than one week after President Trump announced that CNN was the “winner” of one of his so-called Fake News Awards, a man has been arrested for threatening to massacre CNN employees while mentioning “fake news” in one of his threats.

CNN is taking a restrained approach to the story, which other media outlets are covering in earnest. So far the Atlanta-based cable news network has not released video clips of its on-air coverage (the story did not come up during my admittedly incomplete morning scan of CNN), and over the last 24 hours CNN has tweeted just one link to the report posted on its website:

That report, written by Darran Simon, begins,

Do You Know the 27 Different Types of Gen Zers?

When I took to Slack a couple weeks back and asked Ad Age Executive Editor Nat Ives the question posed in this column’s headline, he started typing without missing a beat: “Lemme see … social (media) climbers … VYPs (very young professionals) … bowl cuts … glue sniffers … Benjamin Buttons … loopers … Is any of this right?”

Excellent start! And sure, yeah, maybe all of it is right. Or at least it can be made right, in that, given an hour or two, I bet Nator you or Icould come up with thoughtful-ish justifications for those subdivisional labels, and another 21 to boot, do a quick Google image search for public-domain photos, fire up PowerPoint and, voil, Nat would be a Gen Z “expert” ready to hit the conference circuitcable news appearances and a book deal to follow. (Note to Nat: If you do this, I want 10 percent of your take.)

If there’s one thing I hope you get from this Gen Z-focused issue, it’s that while it’s entirely natural to make generational generalizationsand, yes, such generalizations are often useful and even necessary for marketers and content makers and other parties invested in reaching discrete audiencesthere’s also a lot of nonsense baked into the hype.

WPP to End Sponsorship of Swanky London Event Where Men Allegedly Groped and Flashed Hostesses

WPP has promised to end its annual sponsorship of the Presidents Club Charity Dinner—also known as “the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity”—after a damning Financial Times report detailed allegations of harassment and misogynistic behavior at the London soiree.

This 33-year-old “black tie, men-only event” purports to attract “many leading figures from the financial and commercial industries” and happens each January in one of London’s fanciest locations: the Dorchester Hotel ballroom.

Financial Times accounting and tax reporter Madison Marriage performed a bold act of journalism by taking a deep, dark look inside the Dinner. According to her must-read (paywalled) account, this event—which ostensibly exists to raise money for reputable charities—very quickly descended into sexual debauchery.

130 women were specifically hired to serve as hostesses; unbeknownst to organizers, two of them were undercover FT journalists. According to the report published today, their experiences consisted primarily of fighting off the aggressive advances of wealthy, aging British men.

One key passage from the piece:

Over the course of six hours, many of the hostesses were subjected to groping, lewd comments and repeated requests to join diners in bedrooms elsewhere in the Dorchester.

Hostesses reported men repeatedly putting hands up their skirts; one said an attendee had exposed his penis to her during the evening.

The full story includes many more details about the way these women were recruited by an event-based casting agency and warned that men would try to hit on them in various and sundry ways throughout the dinner. Its staffers then observed these women and encouraged them to engage more directly with attendees—even if that meant dealing with many unwanted touches.

Attendees at the Dinner must sit at tables sponsored their employers and bid on auction items like “lunch with Boris Johnson.” The event was hosted by British comedian David Walliams and included top politicians leaders of businesses like Goldman Sachs and Barclays. This year and in past years, one of those companies has been WPP.

According to the report, Martin Sorrell was not at the table last week “though he has attended in the past.” But WPP Europe chief operating officer Andrew Scott reportedly sat at the table in his place.

In response to the allegations in the story, the world’s largest agency holding company has decided to stop sponsoring a table and sending its executives to the dinner each year.

“WPP has traditionally sponsored a table at the Presidents Club dinner to support its fundraising for children’s charities,” read a statement provided by a company spokesperson. “Neither the company nor our attendees were aware of the alleged incidents until informed of them by the Financial Times. WPP takes these reports very seriously and, while we will continue to support relevant charities, in light of the allegations we are ending our association with the event.”

All involved parties including the hotel, the casting agency and the Presidents Club itself told FT that they were varying degrees of shocked and appalled by the behavior detailed in the story. The WPP representative declined to elaborate on the statement provided to us above.

The entire story documents behaviors that many in “polite society” believe to be relics of a not-so-distant past. It also includes a video segment.

Mistress Appoints Senior Leadership Trio

Independent Los Angeles agency Mistress welcomed Allison Barnes as director of media, Kristin “KB” Busk as director of social strategy and promoted Iman Forde to director of project management, all new positions at the agency.

“Allison and KB are both experienced, thoughtful and analytical marketers who are helping Mistress evolve into a truly full service shop offering rebundled agency services,” Mistress founding partner Christian Jacobsen said in a statement. “We are growing our expertise in business strategy, customer acquisition and media services, especially in digital and social, and Allison and KB are an important part of that. They are helping Mistress become a more complete partner to our clients. We’ve already benefited from their impact on both our services and culture.”

Barnes (pictured left) arrives at the agency from Supermoon, following the merger of the two agencies last year. She served as director of media services for the agency beginning in 2012 and previously held leadership roles at agencies including Starcom, Mediavest, and Spark Foundry.

Busk (pictured right) arrives from digital studio Busk + Vine, where she spent around a year as director of content development, following over a year and a half as senior digital strategist at PMK*BNC digital agency Vowel.

Forde (pictured center) was promoted to director of project management after nearly three years with the agency, most recently as senior project manager. She joined Mistress as a project manager in 2015, after six months in the same role with Select World, working with P&G brands.

“Iman has proven she can lead delivery in all aspects of our business from managing larger agency of record accounts to quick nimble creative projects to social AORs,” Jacobsen added. “She has successfully filled in gaps when needed and is a fundamental leader at Mistress as we continue to push the agency forward in our mission to deliver results at speed.”
