Google Election Inquiry Is Said to Focus on YouTube and Gmail


As part of a wide-ranging investigation into how Russian-linked operatives harnessed social media during the 2016 U.S. election, lawmakers are homing in on Google services including YouTube and Gmail.

The Senate has called Alphabet Inc.’s Google to testify Nov. 1, along with executives from Facebook . and Twitter. A U.S. House of Representatives panel, which is running its own probe, is focusing on any materials on Russian ad buying on Google, search engine manipulations, fake news and the potential uses of YouTube, according to two House committee members. Another target of the inquiry is Gmail, the committee members said.

Meanwhile, CNN reported late Tuesday that some Russian-linked ads published on Facebook targeted the key Midwestern states of Michigan and Wisconsin. The ads appeared to target demographic groups crucial to President Donald Trump’s victory, the network said, citing four people it didn’t identify.

Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP, the world’s biggest advertising company, said on Wednesday that he expects the tech companies to enter the fray. The opinion is shared by Manchester United Vice Chairman Ed Woodward. “Absolutely I think they’ll enter the mix,” he said last month.

The cost of building an explosive like this is just 5 dollars, while recovering a victim, including prosthetics and therapies, costs an average of 150 USD. Until 2016 there were11,460 victims reported and almost 52 million square meters of territory are sown with them, making Colombia the second most affected country in the world, just behind Afghanistan. Despite this problem began more than 20 years ago, neither the media nor the government, has given it the importance it deserves, making Colombians unaware of this terrible fact while the number of innocent victims was still growing. Not even a signed peace treaty seems to end this problem.As the most read news magazine in Colombia, our objective was to demonstrate Semana’s power to create changes within society through its content.
