Here's Facebook's Full-Page NYT Ad About 'Protecting Our Community From Election Interference'

Facebook believes in the power of print advertisingtoday, at least.

If you pick up a copy of this morning’s New York Times and turn to page A5, you’ll find a full-page ad from Facebook, just opposite the start of the international news section, headlined “Protecting Our Community from Election Interference” that outlines nine “Immediate actions we’re taking.” The exact text of the ad doesn’t seems to be posted on Facebook’s various official comms channels (so I’ve typed it verbatim for you, below), but it does draw language from both a Monday post by Joel Kaplan, Facebook’s VP of global public policy, titled “Improving Enforcement and Transparency of Ads on Facebook” and a Sept. 21 post by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his personal Facebook page.

Members of Congress and other would-be regulators of Facebook are the obvious targets for this Times ad.

'I Think It's Awesome!' Here's Donald Trump Jr. in a Promo Video for a Gun Silencer

In the wake of the Las Vegas massacre, various news organizations and commentators have noted that Congress, egged on by the NRA, has actually recently been considering weakening gun-control laws, including those covering gun silencers. As NBC News’ Alex Seitz-Wald reports,

The day House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot in June during a congressional baseball practice, his colleagues were supposed to hold a hearing on a bill to make it easier for Americans to buy gun silencers. That hearing was postponed because of the shooting.

The Vegas mass shooting seems likely to further delay consideration of that bill, but meanwhile all the discussion about silencers has drawn fresh attention to Donald Trump Jr.’s relationship with SilencerCo, a West Valley City, Utah-based maker of silencers. MSNBC anchor Chuck Todd has been playing excerpts from a promotional video titled “SilencerCo One on One: Donald Trump Jr.” that the company uploaded to YouTube last Sept. 26, when Trump Jr.’s father was still just a presidential candidate. (The video went little noticed at the time, and as of this writing still has fewer than 80,000 views.) Gideon Resnick and Andrew Desiderio of The Daily Beast also cite the video in a post headlined “How Donald Trump Jr. Helped Push the Now Highly Controversial Gun Silencer Bill.”

Translation Service: What IAB Is Really Saying About Regulating Online Political Ads

The ad industry wants you to know that it’s serious about fake news and foreign saboteurs messing with U.S. elections. Not on their watch!

On the other hand, it’s not that excited about new regulations, either.

Look no further than the Interactive Advertising Bureau statement Wednesday expressing some interest in legislators’ idea to make big digital platforms disclose who buys political ads and who sees thema system closer to the rules that TV stations abide by.

Campaign for Sonos One Depicts Smart Speaker as a Real Mood Shifter

Sonos has unveiled its contender in the voice-activated smart speaker market, the Sonos One, and along with it, a new campaign that leverages the music, names and tracks of 40 top recording artists to show how the brand can help you “reset” the mood of your home.

One spot, for example, shows a teenage boy crying in his room. “Play ‘Incomplete Kisses’ by Sampha,” he says, falling back on his bed. When his mother knocks on the door, he commands the device to “Play hardcore,” changing the audio to a glaring tune, until Mom walks in and sees her weepy son. “Play last song,” she says, and the song switches back. “From heartbreak to healing,” the copy reads.

Another shows a man setting out dinner, playing a romantic tune but pausing it when he realizes his wife will be home late from work. When she arrives, still mired in job stress, he taps the speaker and she decompresses. “Play song in the bedroom,” she commands. Copy then reads, “From working late to midnight date,” followed by the tagline, “The smart speaker for music lovers.”

Airbnb CMO Mildenhall to Depart Weeks After Naming New AOR

Airbnb CMO Jonathan Mildenhall will leave the company on October 20, about a month after appointing Wieden & Kennedy as the brand’s new global agency of record.

“When I look back over my three years at Airbnb, I realize that I’ve accomplished what I set out to achieve,” said Mildenhall in an emailed statement. “We’ve created a beloved, mission-driven brand that has helped create phenomenal value.”

In the emailed statement, Mildenhall said Airbnb’s “Belong Anywhere” campaign has become meaningful for the brand’s community worldwide. “This impact leaves me compelled to take what I’ve learned and work with other founders to get people to care deeply about their brands,” the statement added. “This is why I’ve decided to leave Airbnb to set up my own brand consultancy.”

Bye Bye Big Apple: Entertainment Weekly Heads to Hollywood

Entertainment Weekly is preparing to move closer to the film stars and TV personalities it covers. In March it plans to leave the company’s headquarters across from 1 World Trade Center and relocate to Los Angeles, moving into offices that also hold People magazine’s West Coast operations.

The move, announced Wednesday, comes amid company-wide efforts to cut costs and sell titles, as parent company Time Inc. continues a rocky transition from a onetime print advertising powerhouse to a digitally-focused operation. The publisher put itself on the block in March and then decided not to sell itself in April. It was spun off from Time Warner as a publicly traded company in 2014.

A spokeswoman said that around 40 to 45 of the publication’s 66 New York staffers are expected to make the move west. Some editorial employees who don’t want to move will be able to continue working from New York, or will be reassigned to other brands at Time Inc. Others will leave the company.
