What You Need to Know About the Trump Pal Twitter Banned

Oh dear. Stone really lost his shit. So, what did Twitter say about banning him?

Nothing officially, because Twitter says it doesn’t comment about the status of individual accounts. But just below the “Account suspended” notice where Stone’s Twitter feed used to be, there’s a line that reads, “Learn more about why Twitter suspends accounts, or return to your timeline.” One particular passage in the linked page, titled “About suspended accounts,” is obviously relevant:

Abusive Tweets or behavior: We may suspend an account if it has been reported to us as violating our Rules surrounding abuse. When an account engages in abusive behavior, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, we may suspend it temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.

Facebook's Testimony Says Russia Posts Reached 126 Million Users

Facebook is planning to tell a Congressional panel in more detail just how deeply Russian ads and posts infiltrated the news feeds of U.S. voters on its social network, according to prepared testimony obtained by Bloomberg.

At a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing Tuesday, General Counsel Colin Stretch will say that 29 million people were directly served content from accounts backed by the Internet Research Agency, a pro-Kremlin Russian group. Those posts, after they were liked, shared and commented on, traveled to the news feeds of approximately 126 million people at some point over a two-year period, his testimony states. That’s equivalent to about 40 percent of the U.S. population.

Facebook’s testimony portrays the company as shocked about Russian use of its platform for political means — and eager to come up with solutions so it doesn’t happen in the future. The planned remarks underscore that the social network is doing its part to coordinate with Congress so investigators can understand the problem. The hearing Tuesday and two more planned for Wednesday mark the culmination of a weeks-long communication offensive with legislators, including blog posts, executive outreach and the hiring of crisis public relations firms. Facebook may be betting that being helpful and conciliatory now makes it less likely to face cumbersome regulation, though the company says it is open to some legislation on advertising.

Watch the Newest Ads on TV From Geico, Cadillac, Crate & Barrel and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad measurement company with attention and conversion analytics from more than seven million smart TVs. The ads here ran on national TV for the first time yesterday.

A few highlights: An Oscar-winning actress is the new face of Crate & Barrel (Adrianne Pasquarelli previewed the commercial earlier this month: “Reese Witherspoon Is a Hostess With the Mostess in Crate & Barrel’s Holiday Campaign”). Dollar Shave Club rather imaginatively promotes one of its newer products (Alexandra Jardine previewed the ad yesterday: “A Surreal Fantasy of Smoothness Promotes Dollar Shave Club’s Shave Butter”). And a sloth is kind of charmingly awful at a game of charades in the latest Geico ad.

Bat Out of Hell: How the Long Ball Has Helped Boost Fox's World Series Ratings

Baseball purists may pine for the understated spectacle of the classic pitchers’ duel, but if the Nielsen ratings for the 2017 World Series are any indication, an awful lot of fans prefer to bear witness to towering home runs.

Through the first five games of this year’s Fall Classic, the Astros and Dodgers have combined to score a record 22 dingers, and while many of the starting pitchers have groused that the game balls have been “juiced,” the ongoing fireworks display appears to have been a boon for the ratings. The World Series on Fox thus far is delivering 16.1 million viewers per broadcast, which now stands as the second-largest five-game average since the 2009 Yankees-Phillies showdown (18.7 million).

If overall viewership for the Houston-Los Angeles series is down 17 percent compared to the 19.3 million viewers Fox averaged during the analogous stretch of last year’s storied Cubs-Indians set, that was to be expected. Viewers who tuned in for the 2016 World Series saw Chicago slam the door on 108 years of futility, ending the longest championship drought by any major U.S. sports franchise. (That Cleveland was looking to dispel baseball’s second most-enduring title drought — 68 seasons — only served to make last year’s series all the more momentous.)

Social Networks Can't Promise Election Meddling Won't Happen Again

Facebook, Google and Twitter told Congress they aren’t sure they’ve measured the full extent of Russia’s manipulation of social networks in last year’s U.S. presidential campaign and they don’t yet have the technology to prevent it from happening again.

“It really is a global threat,” Colin Stretch, Facebook’s general counsel, said Tuesday at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing when asked if countries such as North Korea and Iran also could use subterfuge to interfere in American politics.

The session was the first in two days of hearings before three congressional committees, as the technology companies face demands for change — and the threat of new legislation to regulate political advertising — after they acknowledged extensive efforts by Russians to sow discord and spread disinformation.

Uber Seeks Global Creative Agency and New Media Partner

Uber is seeking a global creative agency and reviewing its media, according to people with knowledge of the situation, just four months after Bozoma Saint John took the marketing helm at the ridesharing company.

The creative review is for Uber’s global work and will not affect Deutsch’s North American account, Ad Age has learned. Deutsch won the North American creative business last summer following a review. It was not immediately clear if one or multiple agencies previously handled global creative work for Uber, which did not respond to inquiries for comment.

According to people with knowledge of the matter, Uber is also in talks with multiple media agencies to switch up its media agency partnerships, but it was not immediately clear if the discussions regard the brand’s U.S. or global media business.

Toyota's 'Mobility' Olympics Ad Includes People Ages 1-100

Toyota is kicking off its global Olympics sponsorship with a new ad that squeezes 100 peopleages 1 to 100into a 120-second video that positions the automaker as a mobility provider, creating more than just cars.

The term “mobility” has emerged as a buzzword in automotive marketing as brands look to remain relevant in the age of car- and bike-sharing and self-driving vehicles that are expected to hit roads in the coming years. Ford, for instance, used the theme for a 2017 Super Bowl ad that spotlighted its vehicles and services as a means to help people get unstuck from sticky transportation situations. Toyota uses an emotional and inspirational tone, befitting of Olympics advertising.

The ad, called “Mobility for All,” spotlights 100 people in every stage of life, from a toddler to a Paralympic fencer to an elderly woman getting assistance from a Toyota “human support robot.” It is part of a broader campaign called “Start Your Impossible” that will launch Wednesday in 21 countries, marking the start of Toyota’s new global sponsorship of the Olympics and Paralympic games.

Publishers' Delay Is Holding Chase Back From Going All-In on Ads.txt

JPMorgan Chase turned heads last March when it slashed the number of sites where its ads appeared to 5,000 from some 400,000. The move, prompted by brand safety concerns, came after Chase found ad-tech systems placing its ads on websites like “Hillary 4 Prison.”

Today, the company buys from roughly 7,000 websites that it’s manually added to a so-called “whitelist,” which largely consists of premium, well-known publications, Jake Davidow, head of media buying at JPMorgan Chase, tells Ad Age. (Its new buying process has reduced detected fraud by 49 percent and increased ad viewability 5 percent, he said at AdExchanger’s Programmatic I/O conference.)

And yet Chase remains vulnerable to an ever-growing scam known as “domain spoofing,” in which fraudsters pose as premium sitesperhaps the same sites that appear on Chase’s whitelist.

Netflix Halts 'House of Cards' After Spacey Harassment Claims

Netflix has suspended production of “House of Cards” following a sexual harassment allegation against star Kevin Spacey, putting the future of the company’s defining show in jeopardy.

Production of the sixth and final season of the political drama was just getting underway in Baltimore, though Spacey had yet to arrive. Spacey, 58, who stars as venal politician Frank Underwood, was accused of making sexual advances toward a 14-year-old boy more than 30 years ago.

Netflix and Media Rights Capital, the studio that makes and owns the series, must decide whether to proceed given the allegations against Spacey, an Oscar-winning actor who helped put Netflix on the map as a home of high-end TV. The show was Netflix’s first hit original series, earning critical praise, winning awards and convincing millions of people to sign up for the streaming service.
