Never Mind the 'World's Most Valuable Brand.' What's the Sexiest Brand Alive?

The release today of Interbrand’s annual list of the world’s most valuable brandsmore on that in a momentcalls to mind a Smirnoff ad starring Ted Danson that debuted online this summer and has lately been running on TV. “People might think that Smirnoff is made in Russia, but it’s actually made here in America,” Danson says. And then he adds, “People also might think that I was named Sexiest Man Alive once. I wasn’t. But I could have been. But I wasn’t.”

Honestly, I kind of felt like I needed a shot of Smirnoff after reading the first few lines of the Interbrand Best Global Brands 2017 report, released today:

Growth has taken on a new form in the Age of You. As new dynamics emerge and change the shape of business by the minute, it demands new ways for organizations to harness and channel that change. But the world’s leading brands aren’t waiting for change to happenthey’re acting rather than reacting, growing rather than maintaining, and mastering Growth in a Changing World.

Adidas Marketer Arrested in FBI Corruption Probe

The FBI has charged the director of global sports marketing at Adidas of participating in a bribery scheme in which college basketball players were paid to attend universities affiliated with the brand and then later signed with Adidas if they turned pro. The charges, outlined in a federal criminal complaint, provide a glimpse into the underbelly of college athletics and the role sports brands play in steering athletes to certain schools.

Adidas’ Jim Gatto, who was arrested, is among 10 people facing federal criminal charges. Also implicated are four assistant basketball coaches, as well as financial advisors and managers, according to the Department of Justice. Media reports have reported that the coaches are from Auburn University, University of Arizona, Oklahoma State University and University of Southern California.

“Today, we became aware that federal investigators arrested an Adidas employee. We are learning more about the situation. We’re unaware of any misconduct and will fully cooperate with authorities to understand more,” said an Adidas spokeswoman in a statement. Gatto has been with Adidas for 24 years, according to his LinkedIn page.

AMC Theaters Backs Virtual Reality With $20 Million Investment

AMC Entertainment Holdings, the biggest cinema chain in the U.S., is investing at least $20 million in virtual-reality arcades and productions as growth stagnates for traditional moviegoing.

The exhibitor, which has lost half its market value this year after a poor summer box office, will be the lead investor in a $20 million series B financing round, committing $10 million to virtual reality entertainment company Dreamscape Immersive. Another $10 million will be invested in a content fund, and the chain will finance the rollout of six VR centers in North America and the U.K. over the next 18 months.

AMC, which in June unveiled an Imax VR center at one of its multiplexes in New York City, could use the technology to attract more young people to theaters and rekindle their interest in movies. While Imax Corp.’s VR centers allow players as a group or individually to participate in various VR games and experiences, Dreamscape Immersive lets up to six people walk around a virtual world as an avatar, untethered to a computer and using their entire body as they would in the real world.

Uber's New 'Good Cop' Tack Will Face Test in City Tussles

Uber is testing out a new conciliatory tone in London, where officials said they wouldn’t renew the ride-hailing service’s operating license. It’s going to have ample opportunity to see if that approach will work in the U.S.

San Francisco’s city attorney is investigating whether Uber Technologies Inc. is a public nuisance. In New York, officials are mulling ways to tighten controls on ride-hailing, including requiring a quarter of all trips come with wheelchair-accessible vehicles. And Seattle has passed an ordinance to make it easier for Uber drivers to unionize.

“Uber is at a turning point with big-city governments,” Jon Orcutt, director of communications and advocacy for the TransitCenter, said of Uber and other ride-sharing companies. “London’s action to threaten to withdraw their license really could turn the corner in a more normal regulatory situation for Uber.”
