Simon Wiesenthal Center Slams German Mag for Its Trump-as-Hitler Cover

A translation:

The right-wing protesters in Charlottesville raised their arms to the Nazi black, and the American president has not distanced himself from this gesture or from the mindset of the people. On the contrary, Donald Trump had seen in some of them “fine people.” With this attitude, he shares with the protesters and greets them in a transcendent sense — that is exactly what the Stern cover visualizes. It is, of course, far from us to want to minimize the atrocities of the National Socialists.

Hamburg-based Stern has been published since 1948 and is owned by Gruner + Jahr, a division of Bertelsmann. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, “an international Jewish human rights organization dedicated to repairing the world one step at a time” per its mission statement, was started in 1977 and is named after Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal.

Apple Cuts Iran Apps From Store Due to Sanctions, App Founders Say

On a Saturday in mid-August, Iranian entrepreneur Mehdi Nayebi received an email from Apple’s App Store Review. His application, AloPeyk, a delivery service in Tehran, had been removed.

He wasn’t the only one. About a dozen other Iran-focused apps, including Delion Foods, a meals delivery startup, online store Digikala, Bamilo, an e-commerce marketplace, and ride-hailing app Snapp, were also similarly removed, according to Nayebi, and Delion’s co-founder Mahdi Taghizadeh.

“We got removed from App Store overnight, without any sort of warning,” said Nayebi. “We had just published a new version with enormous improvements. When users woke up the next morning, they saw the app is not available anymore.”

A Prize Fight Over What Media 'Wants'

The heavyweight fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor may have been the most-pirated event ever. Is that because the distributors don’t understand the fundamentals of the media business?

Crowd Companies CEO Jeremiah Owyang privately wrote on Facebook, in a post that he allowed me to publicly share, “Many people were live streaming the fight on Periscope. All media wants to be freed.” (While media has no inherent desires, people can’t resist the tendency to anthropomorphize it.)

Owyang’s clever twist on the clich puts the emphasis on media wanting to be “freed” rather than “free,” but the implication was that the $99.95 cost to view the fight in high definition in the U.S. prevented this event from reaching everyone who wanted access to it. This led people to seek alternative ways of viewing the fight. For some, that meant a trip to the pub, but for others, it meant engaging in or abetting some form of theft.

Houston Agencies Cope with Harvey: 'Pray for Our City'

Houston-area ad and PR agencies are among the businesses dealing with the epic storm that has deluged parts of the region with as much as 30 inches of rain since Saturday night. Some agencies remain closed on Monday as the city copes with the havoc wrought by Hurricane Harvey, freeing employees to pitch in on volunteer efforts as rising floodwaters displace thousands of residents, with no immediate end in sight.

Brenda Love, president of independent, Houston-based creative agency Love Advertising, and a native Houstonian, writes in an email that she has never before seen anything like Harvey: “Our client Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture opened his two huge stores as shelters [and is] using his furniture delivery trucks to rescue people. Our PR department has been busy getting the word out. Our new building had flooding. Please pray for our city.”

The Houston office of PR giant FleishmanHillard was among the shops that shut down. “We’re very thankful that all of our employees and their families are safe and out of harm’s way,” says a FleishmanHillard spokeswoman. The agency has reached out to the Houston Food Bank to offer assistance and is also “providing information to our employees across the country with information on how they can donate to rescue and recovery efforts,” she says.

McDonald's Taps Publicis.Sapient, Capgemini for Global IT

Even as consultancies continue to encroach on ad agencies’ traditional assignments from marketers, agencies are increasingly fighting for turf that once belonged to consultants.

Publicis.Sapient, in partnership with global consulting and technology services company Capgemini, has beat out Accenture for an assignment to help McDonald’s create the restaurant experience of the future, according to Publicis Groupe.

The Publicis.Sapient and Capgemini team went up against “large consulting and technology players including Accenture” in a year-long pitch for the fast-feeder, according to an internal note written by Publicis Groupe CEO Arthur Sadoun, which was obtained by Ad Age. Representatives from Accenture and McDonald’s were not immediately available for comment.

Harvey Blasts Brands: Could Cost More Than $1B in Sales

The economic impact of Harvey, the Category 4 hurricane expected to drop more than 50 inches of rain on Houston, Texas, will be substantial, according to a new report. Lost revenue to area restaurants and retailers alone will total around $1 billion, said Planalytics, which provides weather analytics for businesses.

Sixteen years ago, Tropical Storm Allison flooded Houston with 28 inches of rain; Planalytics’ estimate of the economic impact from that storm was $5 billion.

While restaurants such as PF Chang’s and Chili’s, and stores such as Dillard’s and Stage Storeswhich have a large percentage of locations in the regionare the most affected, independents could also feel the impact. Evan Gold, exec-VP of global services at Planalytics, says that the storm will affect discretionary purchases over the next week or so as consumers hunker down and refrain from spending on Labor Day or back-to-school. Houston’s surrounding population controls roughly 4% of the spending power in the country, he adds.
