SXSW: The New Rules of TV Marketing in Binge-Watching World

Tune-in messages have become practically irrelevant as more viewers watch TV on a delayed basis. This has forced content creators to rethink how they market their shows to audiences who may not even know on which network their favorite program airs.

On Monday the panel “Bingers & Time-Shifters: The Future of TV Marketing” overflowed with SXSW attendees in the TV industry and marketers trying to figure out how to reach this elusive audience.

Younger viewers spend twice as much time binging content than they do watching TV live, said Melanie Shreffler, senior insights director, Cassandra. These audiences are so committed to binge watching, that 21% said they would prefer to binge watch TV rather than have sex, she added.

Who's to Blame for the Current Ad Tech Trust Gap?

Recently, PluggedBD held an executive-level roundtable titled “Transparency, Measurement and Viewability in the Digital Age,” which began with a discussion about what Procter & Gamble Chief Brand Officer Marc Pritchard meant when he called for ” new [transparency] rules for agencies and ad tech to get paid.”

Not one of the panelists, representing every aspect of ad tech, could exactly answer the question, which prompted moderator Jonathon Shaevitz, CEO of Industry Index, to ask a second question: “Who’s to blame for the ‘trust’ mess we’re in?” That’s when the conversation got really interesting because solving marketing biggest “whodunit” is how we start down the road to redemption.

Who’s really to blame?

In China, Cadillac is Hot; Here's an Inside Look at Its Marketing Strategy

In China, the future of the Cadillac looks bright. In the first two months of 2017, the brand sold more than double the number of cars from the same period a year ago, rising 106%. That’s in contrast to the U.S., where Cadillac sales shrank 6.5% so far this year. Chinese Cadillac buyers are young too, at an average age of 33.

In China, the car brand doesn’t have the baggage it has in the U.S., where people grew up seeing their grandparents’ generation drive Cadillacs. The premium GM brand didn’t officially enter China until 2004; its central challenge is to compete with German brands.

Audi, Mercedes and BMW together control 75% of the luxury car market in China, said Jochen Siebert, managing director of JSC Automotive Consulting. Cadillac is in No. 4 place with about 6%, he said, adding that growth has been helped by dealer discounting on its XTS sedan and the introduction of the XT5 SUV.

Snapchat Receives Poor Grades From Marketers

It might be early days, but marketers are seeing little return when advertising on Snapchat. They also seem more interested in spending ad dollars on the company’s newfound rival: Instagram.

That’s according to a series of studies published by RBC Capital Markets in partnership with Ad Age, where some 1,600 marketers were surveyed in an attempt to gauge the pulse of the digital advertising industry. The sobering news underscores the uphill battle Snapchat faces as other platforms like Facebook-owned Instagram and Messenger mimic its features. It also shows Snapchat is a far cry from being in similar company to Google or Facebook, which both received significantly higher marks from marketers.

Between Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, Yahoo, AOL and YouTube, Snapchat only outperformed AOL in terms of ROI, scoring a 3.43 out of a possible 8 points, according to the survey (AOL scored a 2.88). Google (6.98) and Facebook (6.72) led the pack, performing nearly twice as better than Snapchat, RBC said.

If All Sales is Account Based, Why Isn't All of Marketing?

“There’s nothing new under the sun,” wrote the sage nearly 25 centuries ago, and it still holds true for B2B marketers today. Despite the current hype, account-based marketing is nothing new. Whether it’s called company targeting or ABM, account-based marketing has been part of the B2B marketer’s toolkit for more than 20 years. What has changed is how it’s done.

Driven by gains in technology, reporting and data verification, ABM has surged into the mainstream. According to SiriusDecisions research, 87% of B2B companies say ABM has become extremely or very important to their overall marketing efforts. Suddenly, a practice traditionally used by sales is driving the marketing plan.

However, even as they recognize its importance, most B2B marketers haven’t made the investment in ABM. More than half of B2B marketers do not have an ABM solution in place, according to a Chief Marketer study. For those that do have one, according to a similar study by Demand Gen Report (DGR), the majority have only been doing it for a year or less.
