Meet the Two Guys Who’ve Made Ridiculing Chevrolet Ads a Wicked Funny Art Form

For Ali Shahriari and Dave Irwin, advertising is a funny business. Under the name Zebra Corner, they’ve earned their stripes with a series of outrageous online parody videos, frequently zinging Chevrolet’s “Real People” commercials. Their latest work is approaching 1.6 million YouTube views since it dropped last Thursday. It features the hyper-sarcastic Irwin, aka “Mahk,”…

Kellyanne Conway Is 'The True First Lady of Trump's America,' Says New York Magazine

Ad Age “Media Guy” columnist Simon Dumenco’s media roundup for the morning of Monday, March 20:

There is, yes, some depressing news below. But there is also a dancing zebra — so there’s hope! (Or something.) Anyway, let’s get started …

1. The No. 1 story at New York magazine’s website as of this morning is this week’s cover story by Olivia Nuzzi. It’s headlined “The True First Lady of Trump’s America” on the print cover and “Kellyanne Conway Is a Star” inside the magazine and online. Here’s one choice paragraph:

This Pop Singer’s New Music Video Is Actually a Powerful Message About Domestic Violence

Let’s talk about flowers. Flowers are living things that, to thrive, generally require a few nice things–fertile soil, sunshine, water, a friendly community of bees or other pollinators to move things along. Not all flowers are attractive and lovely, though. The corpse flower, for example, smells like rotting flesh, the better to attract its own…

Mostodon "Show yourself" (2017) 3:10 (USA)

Death is a hapless schmuck trying to live the Middle American Dream and earn enough to a classy car, er hearse in this music video for Mastodon’s new track “Show Yourself.” It’s pretty freaking hilarious send up of Glengarry Glen Ross. The best and silliest moment is the way in which Death succeeds in killing all of Mastodon as they drive by on their tour bus. The track is pretty riff heavy, too.

Ohio Lottery "Headphones" (2017) :30 (USA)

Really smart insight here as a way to get people to play the “lesser” scratch offs who don’t offer million dollar payouts: It doesn’t take a lot to feel like a million.
Life-cancelling headphones? Perfect. 200 bucks is plenty to get a pair and tune out the family noise. The art direction is spectacular here, too. It’s like I’m in this alternate reality watching this woman zone out. The voice over only adds to the comedy. Great stuff.

The toilet’s makin’ a funny sound. And the garage door is about to fall right off. But you won 5,000 from an Ohio Lottery Instant Game. Today is Ray Day.
And OH man what a day it is. Sitting in your tub with a giant plate of nachos while a saxophonist plays Smoove Jazz just for you and someone else paints your portrait.. The slow pull back here is delicious. And so is the insight: it doesn’t take a lot to feel like a million.

 Leroy Merlin - Life's Adventure (2017) 1:50 (France)
Here’s a bit of inspiration for you today: a house on water. In this spot for home improvement store Leroy Merlin, the sea is a metaphor for a couple going through the various phases of life while renovating their home. Apparently the production was crazy, too. They shot the scenes three times, on dry land, on a moving set and also on water. It took seven days in South Africa, and needed a whole host of divers, drones and helicopters to get it right. The song, by the way, is a cover of Rod Stewart’s “Sailing,” and you couldn’t have picked a better track if you tried.

How to Turn Your Microwave into a Camera

You can turn a microwave into a camera and I’ll teach you how in a minute, but before I do, let me share this news item. In a recent interview with a reporter from the Bergen Record, While House counselor Kellyanne Conway was asked about surveillance. She responded: “There are many ways to surveil each other now, unfortunately. There was an article this week that talked about how you can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets, any number of different ways. And microwaves that turn into cameras, et cetera. So we know that that is just a fact of modern life.”

On its face, her statement about “microwaves that turn into cameras, et cetera” is ridiculous. It reminds me of the late Sen. Ted Stevens’ famous “Tubes” speech. I went right after “Uncle Ted” for his technofaux pas, but even then, there were bigger issues to consider. It would be exceptionally easy to jump all over Ms. Conway for her techno-faux pas. But doing so would be taking a cheap shot at an easy target while completely missing a very, very important teaching moment.

Art Fair Tokyo: Dress for Venus

The theme for Art Fair Tokyo this year is “Art is Alive -We approach art, art approaches us”. To bring people closer to classical arts, we decided to conduct a live performance using William Bouguereau’s masterpiece, “The Birth of Venus” . The concept is “Dress the Venus, who has been naked for 100years” This is an unprecedented art project, where the Venus, who has been naked for 100 years, will be dressed in a handmade dress, designed by Junko Koshino; a representative fashion designer of Japan. After the Venus is converted into a 3D model, the newly designed dress will be drawn on her in VR environment. AI was trained to replicate the style and touch of Bouguereau, and at the end, the dress was synthesised onto the original painting. This is an entirely new Live drawing performance, merging art, fashion and technology.
