Self-congratulatory discussions inevitably follow moments of discord in the United States. So why aren’t they getting us anywhere?

Colson Whitehead explores with brute realism and fablelike allegory a network of black and white activists who helped slaves escape to freedom.

Everyone’s heard the one about Facebook going after TV ad dollars. But during last week’s quarterly earnings call, Facebook Chairman-CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company will eventually start to target search dollars as well.
Can Facebook be as good as, or even replace, paid search for some ad objectives? It may sound crazy, but the answer is yes. And the twist is that Facebook doesn’t need to have a full-fledged paid search business — or even be a search engine — to do it.
Before I go on, I want to be clear that I don’t consider Facebook a search property in the way that advertisers think of paid search. Its users don’t go there with intent to buy or do something, the way they do when they search on Google, and there’s no reason to think that will change much in the future.
Instagram is morphing into a Snapchat lookalike. On Tuesday it introduced a “Stories” feature, just like its upstart rival, that lets people create video montages documenting their daily activities that disappear in 24 hours.
“With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting,” Instagram said in a blog post. “Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want. You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.”
That’s the whole premise of Snapchat.

Stagwell Group, founded by former Microsoft executive Mark Penn, has acquired a majority stake in global marketing shop PMX Agency, formerly Paradysz + PM Digital.
PMX Agency is Stagwell’s fourth acquisition since October 2015. The holding company’s other agencies include National Research Group, political consulting firm SKDKnickerbocker and creative digital agency Code and Theory, which it bought in January.
“We continue to fill in the marketing wheel,” said Mr. Penn. “We have a great digital agency in Code and Theory, public affairs with SKDKnickerbocker and research with NRG, so this is another piece of the puzzle for us.”
