Why Facebook Live Doesn't Make Sense for Advertisers

With Facebook announcing mid-roll ads for Facebook Live, the social network is showing a startling disconnect with how much consumer engagement has changed.

Essentially, the concept strives to resurrect the 20th-century TV broadcasting model within the context of a 21st-century social network. Having just recently started testing mid-roll ads, Facebook Live wagers that viewers who log onto the site to see photos and updates from family and friends will not only want to watch live broadcasts — but will also stay tuned for the ads that scroll in the midst of the live programming.

Here’s why it doesn’t translate.

Is Your Local Macy's on the Closures List?

When Macy’s announced earlier this month its plan to close 100 stores, or 14% of its 728-unit fleet, consumers panicked, investors cheered and analysts gave a slow clap. In the age of omnichannel shopping, almost all retailers are rethinking their brick-and-mortar strategy by trimming stores and allocating more assets to e-commerce.

Since Macy’s is keeping mum on which stores will get the axe next yeara spokesman said the department store chain will publish its list once decisions are made and the company has no comment until thensome firms are researching the issue themselves. 1010data, a data analytics company, recently analyzed consumer behavior and market share to develop its own list of the top 10 likely store closures.

The Midwest-heavy list includes Milwaukee, Wisc., where 1010data found Macy’s has lost 14% of its market share between 2014 and 2015 to retail rivals; Pittsburgh, Penn., where Macy’s has lost 12% of share; Hartford, Conn., where the brand lost 9.4% share; Philadelphia, Penn., where it lost 9.1%; and Detroit, Mich., where it lost 8.2%. Stores in Cincinnati, Ohio; Daytona Beach, Fla.; St. Louis, Mo.; and Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio round out the list.

Maytag Plug-In Eliminates Political Smears From Social Media

Ever wish you could block negative political commentary from your social-media feeds? Maytag believes it has found a way to do so and help sell stainless-steel appliances at the same time.

The Whirlpool Corp. brand is launching a plug-in for the Chrome desktop browser that that will replace political “smears” with humorous content it promises will be non-annoying. The idea is to promote Maytag’s fingerprint- and smear-resistant stainless steel, available on all of its new appliances.

Maytag embarked on the project because of two pieces of feedback from consumers, said Brendan Bosch, senior brand manager. “The first was that stainless steel can be really difficult to clean and easy to get dirty,” he said. “The second was more about social media, that most people find negative political chatter to be one of the most annoying things they come across. So we thought it would be fun to combine both of those insights by creating a plug-in.”

'Nightmare' in Rio: NBC's Olympics Ratings Down 15% From London

Since the 2016 Summer Olympics wound down Sunday night, NBC’s PR apparatus has been trying to put a brave face on its performance in Rio, but the final ratings data is the stuff of network boss Steve Burke’s nightmares.

Speaking in mid-June during Guggenheim Securities’ sixth annual TMT Symposium, the NBC Universal CEO said that his biggest fear heading into the Olympics was that young people simply wouldn’t show up. “My worry is that that feeling is — you wake up in the morning and you have either hooked America, and you can tell right after the opening ceremony, in the first two or three nights,” Mr. Burke said, in response to a question posed by Guggenheim executive chairman Alan Schwartz. “Either America has fallen in love all over again or they haven’t, and my nightmare is we wake up someday and the ratings are down 20%.”

While Mr. Burke’s nightmare scenario didn’t play out to the letter, the final Nielsen numbers were fairly grim. Through the 17 nights of ceremonies and competition, NBC averaged 26 million viewers and a 14.9 household rating, which marked a 15% decline from the 2012 Summer Games’ draw of 31.1 million viewers and a 17.5 rating. (Rio’s ratings reflect NBC’s Total Audience Delivery, a metric that blends broadcast and cable prime-time deliveries with streaming data.)

Marketer's Playbook Video: Is Domino's Pizza the Next Tech Giant?

The next big thing in tech could come from the unlikeliest of places: a pizza purveyor.

Domino’s took to tech early, introducing in 2008 the Pizza Tracker which marked its transition away from a pizza company that sold online to an e-commerce company that happens to sell pizza.

Today, more than half of Domino’s sales come through its digital channels and about half of those sales are coming through mobile channels with no sign of slowing.
