Interpublic Group PR Agency Golin Appoints Three CEOs
Posted in: UncategorizedAfter serving as CEO of Interpublic Group’s Golin for 13 years and working at the agency since 1986, Fred Cook will shift to the role of chairman as the shop moves to a new leadership model next year with three chief executives.
On Jan. 1, 2017, Matt Neale, president of Europe, Middle East and Africa and co-president of New York; Gary Rudnick, president of Americas; and Jonathan Hughes, international president, will take on the positions of CEO+Vision, CEO+Operations and CEO+International, respectively. The trio will report to Mr. Cook on people and client matters, and IPG’s CFO Frank Mergenthaler on financial and operational issues.
The CEO+ concept emerged from Golin’s six-year-old g4 structure that divides employees into four specialist categories, including explorers, formerly known as strategists (insights and analytics), catalysts (account management and execution), connectors (media and social engagement) and creators (content development and conceptual ideas).

Democratic National Convention Kickoff Is a Bigger Draw Than GOP Confab
Posted in: UncategorizedIn a speech that was at once a celebration of America’s promise and a subtle reminder that the country very much remains a work in progress, Michelle Obama on Monday brought some sorely-needed gravitas to an election cycle that’s been blighted by buffoonery, boorishness and unvarnished b.s. And while Nielsen ratings don’t count as votes, about 3.3 million more people watched the First Lady’s address to the Democratic National Convention than did Melania Trump’s corresponding (and heavily cribbed) speech from a week ago.
According to the live-plus-same-day ratings data, Monday night’s opening convention coverage averaged 25.8 million viewers across ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC, up 15% compared to the 22.5 million viewers who tuned in for the opening salvo of the Republican National Convention. Coverage of the 10 p.m. portion of the DNC — an hour that included the FLOTUS’s speech as well as addresses from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and erstwhile, former White House hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders — drew a 7.2 rating in the core news demo, which works out to around 8.6 million adults 25 to 54. That marked a 21% advantage over the 6.0 rating/7.14 million demographically apposite viewers who tuned in for the first night of the RNC.
Monday night’s convention coverage also was up 18% compared to the 22 million viewers who watched the analogous segment of the 2012 DNC, while the demo was up 15% versus a 6.3 rating/7.48 million adults 25 to 54.

Olympic Logo Used by Rio Cocaine Dealers
Posted in: UncategorizedRio de Janeiro’s drug dealers are seizing the Olympic spirit as tourists start arriving ahead of the games that begin next week.
A recent drug bust in the Lapa bar district turned up 93 packets of cocaine, 28 baggies of crack and some ammunition for a 0.40 caliber gun. Photos posted on the local police’s Facebook page show a packet that says “Rio 2016” and features the Olympic rings. It also warns: “Not for use near children.”
Another photo features a packet saying “Cocaina,” the Portuguese word for the drug, in a design the emulates a Coke logo. Coca-Cola Co. is an official sponsor of the games. The Lapa neighborhood is known for its lively samba clubs and bohemian culture.

Apple Buys CBS's 'Carpool Karaoke' Spin-Off Show
Posted in: Uncategorized“Carpool Karaoke,” a segment from CBS’s “The Late Late Show With James Corden” that regularly goes viral on the web, is becoming a series of its own, to appear exclusively on Apple Music.
Apple Music will stream 16 weekly episodes to its subscribers in more than 100 countries, Apple and CBS said in a statement. Mr. Corden won’t host the series, but will serve as creator and executive producer along with “Late Late Show” producer Ben Winston.
Apple is also developing an unscripted competition series called “Planet of the Apps.” Although it isn’t clear exactly how that show will be distributed, it is expected to appear on Apple platforms, and together with the “Carpool Karaoke” spin-off suggests that the company is moving toward original entertainment that could compete with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
Omnicom Issues Statement on the Tragic Death of South African Business Director
Posted in: UncategorizedToday the Omnicom organization issued a statement regarding last week’s passing of Gordon Patterson, a 25-year agency veteran who had served as business director of the Omnicom Media Group in South Africa since June 2014.
Four days ago, the executive was attacked in the garage of his home by would-be robbers and died after being shot during the ensuing scuffle. The South African intelligence bureau released footage of the incident, and it is deeply disturbing.
The statement from Omnicom:
“It is with great sadness and shock that we acknowledge the passing of Gordon Patterson. A true professional, he had a profound impact on the industry, earning various prestigious accolades and titles over his 25-year career.
At the time of his passing, Gordon was director of the Omnicom Media Group, a board member of the Audit Bureau of Circulation and vice-chairman of the Advertising Media Association of South Africa, among other positions,” the statement continued. “His contributions to the Omnicom Group were valuable and far-reaching; they will be felt long after his passing. Together we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend, and express our condolences to his family.”
Prior to joining Omnicom in 2014, Patterson held various leadership roles within the South African division of Starcom MediaVest Group, launching MediaVest South Africa in 2008. He previously worked as a strategist at the local offices of Y&R and Leo Burnett.
He is survived by his wife.
