The Cannes Lions festival is amazing, but equally as expensive. In fact, by our calculations, a bare bones trip would cost over Rs 430,000. By following channels, social media accounts, and advertisers, you can get an all-access pass to Cannes Lions without breaking the bank. Read more here.

The Apple Lords Giveth, Not Taketh Away

One might be inclined to think that the sole intent of Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference last week was to wreak technological genocide. This month alone, Apple introduced new products and features that supposedly will kill Flipboard, Spotify, Pandora, SoundCloud, Tidal (as if it weren’t self-destructing), Google Maps and other transit apps, Google Now, Google search, Android, Android Auto, PayPal, physical loyalty cards and their related digital apps, Microsoft’s Surface, and more.

Based on the coverage, one might expect tumbleweeds to soon roll through Silicon Valley and cause property values to plummet back to bargain-basement 2013 levels. Entrepreneurs will apply en masse to business school, law school, or — could it be so bad? — medical school. All those 22-year-old startup founders’ parents will be signing up for Snapchat just to tell their kids, “I told you so.”

Yet how come there’s so little focus on the real story of Apple’s annual WWDC? Or the real story from Google’s similar developer conference (Google I/0) that took place the week before? This isn’t a story about what such companies taketh away, but what they giveth. It’s not a story about death, but renewal.

AOL Now Has an In-House Creative Agency to Make Ads for Brands

Add AOL to the list of publishers that have gone from selling ads to making ads.

AOL has created an internal division called Partner Studio that is charged with creating content for advertisers. Both the name and type of work may sound familiar. AOL-owned Huffington Post has its own in-house creative shop called HuffPost Partner Studio that does the same thing for brands, as do an increasing number of publishers including BuzzFeed, Vox Media, The New York Times, Vice, Politico, CNN, Tumblr, The Guardian — the list goes on.

And there’s one big reason all of these publishers are constructing their own creative shops: that’s where the money is starting to flow. Advertisers in the U.S. are expected to spend $4.3 billion this year on so-called “native” ads that emphasize an ad’s editorial-like content and, in some cases, disguise the spots to look like unpaid placements, according to eMarketer. That’s a 34% increase from what brands are projected to have spent on native ads last year.

Gap Brand to Shutter a Quarter of Stores in Turnaround Bid

About 175 underperforming Gap stores will close in North America as part of a comeback plan for the business, which has posted sales declines for five straight quarters and lagged behind its sister chain Old Navy.

The company will shutter 140 of its stores before the end of the fiscal year in January, according to a statement Monday from the San Francisco-based retailer. When complete, the cutbacks will leave the brand with 500 full-price stores and 300 outlet locations in the region. Gap Inc. is also eliminating 250 corporate jobs as part of the move.

“Some of the stores that we’re currently in don’t represent the best of our brand,” Jeff Kirwan, global president for Gap, said in an interview. “We want to make sure we don’t have so much of a disparity.”

Abandoned Green Village in China

Pandora Is Auctioning Off Its In-App Banner Ads Programmatically

Advertisers can now buy banner ads to run in Pandora’s mobile apps as easily as they can book a flight on Kayak.

The streaming radio service has built a private ad exchange to conduct live auctions in which advertisers can place bids for how much they’d be willing to pay for their ad to run in Pandora’s apps. These auctions allow brands to pinpoint the types of listeners they want to see their ad based on who’s listening to Pandora at a given moment, as opposed to advertising to a broader base of people over a longer period of time.

Pandora began operating such auctions last year for banner ads running on its website to fill some extra ad slots. But those advertisers were mainly using the auctions to advertise to people that had visited the advertisers’ sites. Later in 2014 Pandora looked into letting advertisers target their ads based on the service’s user data like age, gender and Zip code information that are provided when people sign up for Pandora. That would open up the auctions’ value beyond retargeting people already interested in a brand to people who may have never heard of a brand but fit the profile of the brand’s customer base.

Swim with Millions of Jellyfish
