Real Guys React to Learning They'll Be Dads in Dove's Charming Ode to Father's Day

And now, for something completely different from Dove: A Father’s Day ad.

Via footage culled from across the Internet, Dove’s Men+Care division treats us to to the spontaneous, real-life reactions of 12 different guys as they learn they are going to be fathers. “Real strength means showing you care, even from the very first moment,” we’re told.

Their expressions are somewhat open to interpretation, but these guys are likely either stunned and elated, shell-shocked or generally experiencing emotions that could be described as “on brand.”

Hey, it’s a branded Father’s Day ad, so I think we know, from the first few seconds, pretty much what to expect. Then again, the one branded Father’s Day commercial to try a truly novel approach, from Angel Soft, has faced its share of crap this week for directing praise to single moms. So Dove is probably wise to give the people what they want.

Created by Havas Helia, the spot makes a nice addition to this year’s onslaught of Father’s Day commercials. The joy and wonder we see here is undeniably authentic, and it’s hard not to smile and/or get a bit choked up along with the guys on screen.

But wait until those 4 a.m. feedings kick in. Let’s see how “strong” those dads feel then. Suckers.

What Were They Thinking? Charleston Newspaper Ran Gun Store Ad Over Shooting Coverage

One month after a Florida newspaper called its gun show ad placement over murder coverage a “regrettable coincidence,” Charleston’s Post and Courier has trotted out the exact same excuse for a similar judgment error.

In today’s example, the South Carolina newspaper ran a sticky-note ad for a gun store over its coverage of Wednesday’s horrific killings of nine church-goers at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

“The front-page sticky note that was attached to some home delivery newspapers on the same day as this tragedy is a deeply regrettable coincidence,” the paper told a Facebook commenter, according to Poynter. “We apologize to those who were offended.”

These apologies (especially those that seem quite literally copied and pasted from previous instances of ridiculous ad placement) do little to appease critics and, if anything, highlight the newspaper industry’s repeated inability to show common sense when it comes to ads that are 100 percent guaranteed by their very nature to appear over high-profile news stories.

While it surely wasn’t an intentional act of malice, these errant ad placements are clearly avoidable and even predictable. They’re absolutely bound to happen, and preventing these gaffes should be a daily aspect of putting out a responsible newspaper.

Black and White Portraits of Animals in Zoos

Volvo – 6 billion hours – (2015)

Volvo - 6 billion hours - (2015)
I swear, soon there will be a Cannes award specifically for creative use of the youtube pre-roll. Volvo’s new XC60 was released with 60 new car feature innovations. 60. That’s a lot of new features. Instead of one standard pre-roll ad, Grey Canada set out to hyperlink all the features to “6 billion hours”; the total amount of YouTube content that is typically viewed over the course of a month. That way, the pre-roll ad you were forced to watch would feel more customized to the YouTube video you were waiting to watch…and catch your attention. Very clever indeedy.

They hyperlinked specific YouTube themes and subject matter to specific car features. Team members from Creative, Media and Analytics all worked together 24hrs/day, creating hundreds of XC60 pre-roll videos that delivered trending & topical messages in real time. In addition to ‘standard’ YouTube themes and tags.

Want More Customers? Less Email is More

We’re all swamped with email every day — some of it important, some not.

For consumers, promotional emails often fall into the “not” category. Some users spend valuable time trying to sort birthday invitations from not-so-special offers, some look for software that will do it for them, and some resort to keeping multiple addresses for work, personal and marketing emails — even the ones sent by brands they like.

The inbox fatigue caused by this daily deluge makes customers more prone to ignore, archive or simply delete messages. And along with the rise of social media and messaging apps, it has led some to declare the death of email as we know it. “RIP, traditional email,” technology writer John Brandon recently wrote.

Andy Bird Named Chief Creative Officer of Publicis NY Flagship Office

Publicis Worldwide North America has named Andy Bird the new chief creative officer for its New York flagship office.

Mr. Bird most recently served as the executive creative director at Publicis London and has increasingly been involved with the agency’s global clients, such as Nestle, Procter & Gamble and Cadillac. On the latter, for example, he oversaw the “Dare Greatly” Oscars spot featuring overachievers such as Steve Wozniak, Richard Linklater and Jason Wu.

Mr. Bird will replace Rob Feakins, who vacated the CCO post of the Publicis Kaplan Thaler flagship last fall. Before he moves permanently to New York in September, Mr. Bird will divide his time between the London and New York offices to ensure a smooth transition for the agency’s business at both offices.

AT&T to Be Fined $100 Million by FCC for Slowing Mobile Data

AT&T will be fined a record $100 million for misleading customers about unlimited mobile data plans under a U.S. regulator’s proposal.

The company slowed speeds for customers with unlimited data plans and failed to adequately notify them of the practice, the Federal Communications Commission said Wednesday. AT&T violated an FCC rule requiring transparency for broadband data practices, the agency said.

“Consumers deserve to get what they pay for,” said FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. “Broadband providers must be upfront and transparent about the services they provide. The FCC will not stand idly by while consumers are deceived by misleading marketing materials and insufficient disclosure.”
