Merkle Will Spend $1 Billion on Acquisitions in Next Five Years

Merkle may be much smaller than its competitors, but the firm is preparing for a growth spurt. The privately held marketing data-services company has set aside $1 billion for acquisitions over the next five years and plans two of those purchases in the next three to four months.

“What we would acquire are technology-enabled services businesses. That’s what we like,” said Merkle CEO David Williams in an interview with Ad Age earlier this week about the company’s long-term plans. “We’ve actually earmarked about $1 billion in capital to spend on acquisitions in the next five years.”

Mr. Williams said he’s shooting for companies that would help Merkle address needs for mid-funnel marketing. That could result in purchases of companies that enable emerging digital efforts like native advertising and video, he said.

April 20 Is Coming And So Are Brand Pot References

April 20 — marijuana’s unofficial holiday — is almost here. So don’t be surprised if pot references start spreading through social media like, well, a weed — including from marketers. After all, with the marijuana legalization movement growing, pot jokes have become fairly safe terrain for brands looking to be seen as hip.

Consider Ben & Jerry’s, which on Monday will debut a new product in its ice cream shops called a “Brrr-ito,” which is an ice cream burrito. To support the launch, the brand is rolling out a digital campaign that includes a video spoofing Apple’s famous”1984″ ad. The spot (above) includes a smoke-filled scene as a voice-over declares that on April 20 “you’ll see why 4-20 will be exactly like 4-20.” The brand has also made T-shirts that ice cream shop workers will wear that promote the burrito with the slogan “This is how we roll.”

“What are two better snack-munchy type foods than ice cream and a burrito?” said David Horowitz, creative director for Mekanism, which is behind the video. And “4-20 is a day when people are maybe thinking about munchies a little bit more.” The Apple spoof, he said, was a nod to another case of a product and date (1984) being “perfectly married together,” he said.

Chrysler vs. Cadillac: Who Did It Better?

Recently, Chrysler and Wieden & Kennedy, Portland debuted the “Drive Proud” advertising campaign. It included an anthem spot featuring shots of accomplished people who, through their achievements alone, made their way into a sort of modern-day American royalty. Shot by HSI’s Sam Bayer and featuring the voiceover of Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, it features the likes of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the NBA’s first full-time female assistant coach Becky Hammon, photographer Kwaku Alston, hotelier Avi Brosh and interestingly, the W&K writer-turned novelist Smith Henderson, author of “Fourth of July Creek” and who previously had worked on the brand’s “Halftime in America” spot starring Client Eastwood.

Earlier in the year during the Oscars, Cadillac and Publicis delivered an ad featuring a similar up-by-your-bootstraps sentiment. Shot by Independent’s Doug Liman, it stars overachievers who “dared greatly” to become who they are today, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater. fashion designer Jason Wu and Njeri Rionge, who helped bring the internet to Africa.

So, who did it better?
