Don't Wait for NewFront Pitches: Here are the Top Beauty and Style Channels on YouTube (and How Much They Earn)

As companies from BuzzFeed to Hulu prepare to pitch advertisers on their “premium”video series at the Digital Content NewFronts, it’s perhaps time for a reminder that plenty of, well, arguably non-premium content creators are already good friends with marketers.

So here’s a look at 20 of the most brand-friendly beauty and fashion channels on YouTube, according to OpenSlate rankings from Outrigger Media, which tries to help brands navigate YouTube’s sprawling content machine. OpenSlate rates more than 200,000 video producers on criteria such as content quality, publishing frequency and expertise in the subject at hand.

Outrigger also estimated the channels’ monthly earnings — after YouTube’s cut. YouTube’s cut, of course, is why so many companies at the NewFronts will be seeking sponsors for their planned video series, as opposed to pre-roll and overlay advertisers: YouTube doesn’t get a cut if the sponsors are baked in early.

Tencent Profits Soar 50% on Revenues from Online Games, Ads

Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. posted a 50% leap in quarterly profit as it reaps higher revenue from more than 1 billion users of its WeChat and QQ messaging services.

Net income climbed to $941 million in the three months that ended Dec. 31, up 50% from the year-earlier period, the Shenzhen, China-based company said in a statement Wednesday.

Billionaire Chairman Ma Huateng is finding ways to make money from instant messaging through advertising and payment services as Tencent steers shoppers to e-commerce partner JD.com and expands its game lineup to compete with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The company is trying to reach more users with deals to stream content such as “Game of Thrones” and to make WeChat among the first applications integrated with Apple’s smartwatch.

How To Go Viral in China Without Even Trying: A Lesson From BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed doesn’t have a Chinese-language edition, but it might want to get on that, since Chinese readers are already translating its stories.

A month ago, BuzzFeed writer Matt Stopera was unknown in China. Now he’s a minor celebrity. Paparazzi awaited him on arrival at a Chinese airport this week. He has more than 180,500 followers on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, and he has even hit the No. 1 trending spot on the platform.

And it’s all because his phone got stolen.

American Express Teams With Leading Brands to Launch Plenti

American Express is teaming up with marketers to launch Plenti, a loyalty program that allows shoppers to earn and redeem rewards points across various brands. The loyalty coalition program — one of the first in the U.S. — is slated to roll out nationwide in May with a roster that includes AT&T, ExxonMobil, Macy’s, Nationwide, Rite Aid, Direct Energy and Hulu.

Plenti differs from American Express’s other rewards programs in that it’s not tied to a credit card. It is free to join and works with all accepted payment networks, including rivals MasterCard and Visa. Consumers can even use cash. The company sought out major brands in different industries to build credibility and establish a wide footprint for the program.

“Only a few companies have the mindset and the willingness to do something as complicated and as complex as this,” said Abeer Bhatia, exec VP-CEO of U.S. Loyalty at AmEx, adding that the effort is two years in the making. “We’re very fortunate to have these guys join.”

Anomaly's Latest Intellectual Property Play? Art

You may find the fruits of Anomaly’s next initiative sitting on your office desk, or perhaps in a museum or art gallery, rather than online or on TV. Already known for successful intellectual property creations such as Eos lip products and the cooking show “Avec Eric”, the agency is now intensifying its sights on China and its environs through a joint venture with street-culture brand Mighty Jaxx.

The Singapore-based Mighty Jaxx, founded in 2012 by Jackson Aw, is a collective that creates limited-edition 3D art figures out of 2D sketches from street artists around the world.

The small but successful company has already seen sales in the “millions” out of its home turf, according to Anomaly founding partner Carl Johnson, but the plan is to use the new partnership to build the offerings out globally, with heavy concentration on the China market and additional expansion in the U.S.

Cross-Device Tracking? The FTC Wants to Know More

Marketers have become obsessed with connecting consumer profiles from the web to their phones to their TVs and beyond, and data services and tech firms are scrambling to make that a reality. Cross-device tracking is big and the Federal Trade Commission is watching.

The commission announced yesterday it will hold a workshop dedicated to the subject in November at its Washington offices. On the agenda: discussions on how cross-device tracking works, the types of data companies can glean from such technologies, benefits and privacy risks to consumers, and whether industry self-regulation covers this rapidly-evolving area appropriately.

The FTC’s workshop seeks to address a number of questions about the potential benefits to consumers of effective cross-device tracking, as well as to examine the potential privacy and security risks.
