How Under Armour Responded to Its Biggest PR Crisis

Under Armour in its 18 years has had to deal with crisis communications from time to time. But earlier this year, it faced its biggest communications crisis yet — one that was global, far-reaching and required immediate action. After Under Armour bragged to reporters about the high-performance speedskating suits it had provided the U.S. team for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the team started losing races. Were the suits the problem? Hints began to emerge. And then there came the the Wall Street Journal story headlined “Under Armour Suits May Be a Factor in U.S. Speedskating’s Struggles.”

Diane Pelkey, VP-global communications and entertainment at Under Armour, described the company’s response to the crisis during an appearance at Ad Age’s CMO Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday. That included responding quickly, frequently reiterating the company’s mission statement, putting top executives in the media and making sure not to blame the athletes. Here she gives us more detail about the company’s response and key takeaways that other companies can apply, should they find themselves facing a communications crisis of their own.

Destaque, ainda, para a perfeita trilha sonora – o clássico dos anos 1960 This Guy’s In Love With You, de Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass.

Which Comes First…?

Category: Up Your Game
Summary: I recently attended a Warc webinar entitled, “What can we learn from the world’s smartest campaigns?” The presenter said something that particularly caught my attention, something along the lines of, “Channel thinking must be ‘baked in’ to creative strategy.” This is a belief I’ve held for a long time and have always been confused by the fact that clients often split their media buying and creative services between agencies. I never understood how a smart media plan could come together without having an understanding of the creative message, nor how great creative could be developed without the insights of a savvy media planner.

AntiCast 148 – Design e Artesanato

Interpublic's Rogue Experiment for Cadillac Sent to Scrap Heap

On Jan. 1, Uwe Ellinghaus joined Global Cadillac as CMO, having previously been exec VP-marketing and sales at Montblanc. In the weeks following his arrival, the agency premiered its “DJ” ad that lived on the Cadillac website. In early February, Rogue released the provocative “Poolside” spot.

The unapologetic spot took a lot of heat, as it presented its own take on the American dream — work hard for luxury toys — and became the subject to parody.

In May, Rogue released “Evolution of Indulgence” — an ode to luxury — to promote the 2015 Escalade.

Kraft CMO: The Great American Bacon Barter, and More in Agile Marketing

When Kraft Foods Group pitches bacon, it no longer always finds its target consumer by making a big TV buy on a certain network or other. Instead, the company often produces content about bacon that it distributes to a targeted audience in a variety of ways. For one campaign, that meant digital video, social media and a microsite.

It’s part of Kraft’s broader approach to “agile marketing,” Deanie Elsner, exec VP-CMO at Kraft Foods, told a room full of marketers at the Ad Age CMO Strategy Summit in San Francisco Wednesday.

Agile marketing for Kraft — which reported $18 billion in revenue last year — involves a media strategy that shifts from buying broad demographics in a single medium to finding individuals across various media, according to Ms. Elsner. That move has broad implications for agencies.

Target Handpicks Brand Partners for Sustainable 'Made to Matter' Push

It’s green-friendly, but Target’s latest marketing initiative runs on cut-throat competition too. To join the program — “Made to Matter,” a collaborative effort with natural, sustainable and organic product brands — companies need to pass muster with some critical judges.

The co-founders of the program had to pitch the entire Target boardroom on their products, Plum Organics President Neil Grimmer recalled at Ad Age’s CMO Strategy Summit conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

“I wanted to make sure I blew away Neil’s presentation,” interjected Eric Ryan, co-founder of Method, another early participant.

Low-Angle Shot Block Architecture

Sometimes collaboration, not innovation, can be the key to winning campaigns

Media Week Awards entries used to be awash with companies claiming “media firsts”. They ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous – from takeovers of Coronation Street to aromatic front covers and microsites for apps. Being first and owning the idea featured highly.
