The Real Mad Men Diaries: Jane Maas

People have compared Jane Maas to Peggy Olsen of “Mad Men,” but in reality Peggy seems to have more autonomy than the former Ogilvy creative.

Women “weren’t allowed to work on financial, because [male executives] figured we didn’t know how to balance our checkbooks, we weren’t allowed to work on automotive because they figured we didn’t know how to drive a car.”

But today Ms. Maas, the author of “Mad Women: The Other Side of Life on Madison Avenue in the ’60s and Beyond,” cringes while remembering some blatantly sexist work she did on accounts like Maxwell House.

The Real Mad Men Diaries: Judy Wald

It’s well documented that advertising’s creative revolution was male-dominated and often mysoginistic. But in truth, there was a woman behind those men helping to control their fate.

A powerhouse recruiter in the 1960s, Judy Wald regularly shuffled the decks at agencies like Doyle Dane Bernbach and Wells Rich Greene with her creative placements. Her Rolodex was bursting with the hottest names during the Mad Men days including Gene Case, Jerry Della Femina, Ron Rosenfeld and more. Her placements often started a domino effect at agencies.

The secret to her success was that Ms. Wald upended the process business by insisting that the agency, rather than the job candidate, pay her fee. That drew top names to Judy Wald’s recruiting business and merited her a five-page feature in New York magazine in 1968 in which she was called “The eminence grise of advertising. Neverneverland’s own Tinkerbell.”

Forget 'Real Beauty': Ads for Skin-Whitening Beauty Products Just Won't Die

In Asia, Pond’s sells a line of skin-lightening products called “White Beauty.” A recent ad from Pakistan showed a tube of its face wash with the tagline “Dark Out, White In.” The Unilever brand posted the ad on Facebook and urged users to “Click LIKE for fairer skin!”

In Thailand, billboards advertised a whitening feminine wash (yes, that’s a thing) from pharmaceutical giant Sanofi. The ad showed a scale of 10 skin tones, light to dark, leaving women to compare how their nether regions fared.

Across Asia’s diverse beauty markets, one constant is an idealization of fair skin. And skin-lightening is a big — and growing — business here. From January 2010 to June 2014, 30% of prestige face-care products debuting in Asia promised whitening, according to Mintel. In the first half of 2014, that number was over 38%.

Mattel Pushes Barbie as Model of Empowerment for Young Girls

Before Pantene was not sorry, Barbie was unapologetic.

The shapely doll’s turn in Sports Illustrated’s 50th anniversary swimsuit edition earlier this year stirred widespread controversy, drawing both detractors and defenders. The latter, of course, included Mattel, which maintains the campaign is about Barbie the legend and how far she’s come — hence its #unapologetic hashtag and ad copy acknowledging “constant criticism.”

By the toymaker’s logic, Barbie may have begun her “career” as a swimsuit model, but over the years evolved into a multifaceted business person similar to real-life models featured over the years in the Sports Illustrated issue including Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks and Kathy Ireland.

Ad Review: The Truth? Latest Anti-Smoking Effort Is a Hot Mess

With great power comes great responsibility. Spider-Man’s uncle said that once. And if it’s good enough for Spider-Man’s uncle, it’s good enough for the folks over at the American Legacy Foundation. In the latest iteration of its “Truth” campaign, the group switches gears from getting kids to stop smoking to getting celebrities to stop smoking — while blaming them for teen smoking and calling them unwitting dupes of Big Tobacco.

In the second ad, American Legacy says the first ad might have “pissed off” the lawyers of the celebrities — tee-hee, they’re so edgy. Then the smoking celebrities are shown again and called unpaid spokespeople again. Then American Legacy claims it’s not “against these people.” Huge fans, as it turns out! Then the ad repeats the notion that every time a smoking photo gets posted, Big Tobacco gets tons of free marketing. Therefore, don’t post smoking selfies, kids.

American Legacy is making no damn sense and they don’t even know it. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for celebrities, but these people aren’t posting or printing photos of themselves smoking. Rather, they’re having a private moment enjoying a perfectly legal (if harmful) activity out of sight of their fans. How would the folks at American Legacy like it if someone came along and snapped pics of them picking their noses or something?
