Why are you a Graphic Designer?
Well, It started with drawing on back side of notebooks followed by playing with imaginary superheroes inside my head, then watching super cool shows on cartoon network all day. It was clear to me that I want to do some creative job when I grow up. So I was passionate enough to take this field seriously and gave most importance to self learning through Internet and here I am still learning and creating something creative everyday
Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Honestly, I have done B.sc. Computer Science from Delhi University. It took me 2 years to make my parents understand that I could make a good and happy living through Animation/Design Industry job also. Finally, when I was in the 3rd year of my graduation I joined MAAC for Advance Diploma in 3D animation. But after 1 year I left the institute because I was not interested in 3D Animation at that time.
After that through self learning and lots of ‘Pencil Ghissing’ I joined 2D Animation Industry and practice
a lot.
You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
When I do any project, I try to create something according to the project’s need and different from my previous work. Sketching is very Important part of my work, and I just love Character Designing. Even when I am designing for brands, I always try to use Illustrations in my designs to make them different and better. I am trying to create everything in a vector and fun style from last 3-4 years.
Each day I am evolving and I think my style is also improving and changing according to the current trends in art and design.
I would really like to mention my new Doodle Art page called – ‘DOODLE PLAY’ on Facebook. Where I am trying to create some cool doodles everyday and using them in my designs and for some Brands. I am deeply inspired by Kerby Rosanes(Sketchy Stories) and trying to achieve something similar in coming years. So I would like to request people to have a look at my page and enjoy the doodles.
Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
My Parents, Brother and now my beautiful Wife
Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design/Illustration?
Yes, there are so many
of them. But in the beginning of my career, I met superb artist Mohammad Faisal. I have learnt so much from him. He inspired me to keep sketching and creating my own stuff. I am still following that learning and never stop creating my own personal artwork no matter where I am working profesionaly. When I am not freelancing I am working on my personal projects. I would also like to thank Anuj Chowdhary.
Among International Artists I got inspired by Pascal Campion for his amazing illustrations and Compositions, Michael Heald for his kickass game art, Denis Zilber for great character coloring, Stephen Silver for lovely character designs and Kerby Rosanes for Amazing Doodles.
When did you start freelancing?
I am freelancing from last few years. I am available across all social media channels. I like working on various type of projects ranging from game art, T shirt Design, Illustrations for ads and Children books to Creative for social media. But mostly I do freelancing for clients outside India.
Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic design?
Never, But sometimes I think about joining the Singing Industry, as I also love singing. But I know It’s not possible at this moment. Anyway, no matter where I am, I’ll never stop creating something creative and fun in my everyday life.
Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
Yes, these days more and more agencies are using illustrations and creative ads. With so much competition and new age technology, these days agencies are creating ads of totally another level. And illustrations/graphic design is very important part of it’s success.
I work more with agencies and studios.
Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
Both, self advertising is very important to meet and work with new clients. But my happy clients also gave me new projects from time
to time.
Any other Indian graphic designers who you admire?
Faisal Mohammad
Anuj Chaudhary
Direndra Pal
Nitin Rao Kumblekar
Abhishek Malsuni
Dattaraj Kamat
Abhishek Singh
Kshiraj Telang
What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
When I was in college, I read an Interview of a graphic designer and that inspired me a lot to pick this field as my career. So hopefully my interview could inspire someone out there. When I met Faisal Mohammad he told me 2 things which changed my
approach. 1. Pencil Ghiste Raho – Always keep sketching/drawing. and 2. when I told him that I have so many ideas in my mind, but struggle to sketch them. Then he told me that Everybody see nightmares. So for those students who are about to take a course in this field. I would like to tell that Having an interest in design and animation and having an interest in knowing how the animation or design is being made is not same. I have seen many students/mates struggling in this field and then picking some other field as career. So If you are interested in knowing the making and process then only pick up this field as your career.
For all newcomers, I would just like to tell that enjoy everyday in this fun and colourful field. It’s really beautiful to imagine and then create creative things. We all inspire each other in this journey. Don’t compare your art with anyone else.Just express through your art, your style. There is lot of work in this industry, you just have to be at correct place. Follow international and other great Indian Artists on social media, that is the best learning process. By seeing their awesome work and WIP you’ll also push your art to next level. Keep Sketching and always produce your artwork. No matter where you are working as a professional, your personal projects will help you grow and get you new clients. So ‘Pencil Ghiste Raho Dosto’
Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
Yes, change is coming. But I think it will take some time if we’re talking about Indian Clients. But good clients always give you complete freedom and creative space to work on their project. and then they pay you handsomely. But then ther
e are some clients who don’t understand this, and demand top class designs at very low rates. But I try to manage good relationships with my clients.
Mac or PC?
I like Desktop.
Who would you like to take out for dinner?
My beautiful wife
What’s on your iPod?
Please gift me one!
Music is very important part of my life. Whenever I’m sketching or designing, I need music in background. Then it’s only me and my work and then my creative juices come into action.
